hey, i just DL'd Uplink and haven't done anything but the tutorial yet, and i was wondering: if you get tracked and your Gateway confiscated, is there a way to go back (unsave, so to speak), so that you don't have to get a new computer and rejoin Uplink?

Or is it an absolute strict-play thing?

The game is "meant" to be played with "permadeath", meaning when you die, your dead, thats it.  However you can make a copy of the .usr file in the Uplink/users folder and if you get caught you can just replace the dead .usr file with the copy you made earlier.  This will return you to the point at which you made the copy.  :)

aha! naturally.
do you actually die, or can you restart your person, which is the gist i seemed to get from the tutorial.

You pretty much die.  You can blow your gateway to keep from getting caught, but then your out all your hardware and software.  You can start another user obviously, but your old one is gone.  :)

is there a connection-bouncing limit?   cuz i tried some mission through several bounces and got in, but saw no file to delete. Meh, whatever.

No there is no limit on bounces (other than that too many server on the map may cause it to do its little dance).  It appears the AI will delete some of your mission file (to simulate competition) if you are not fast enough.  You can also get missions to copy and delete the same file, so if you delete it before you copy it you have a problem.  :)

ok, another question that i will post within this topic:

i haven't registered, and i got up to Intermediate, so i can't "improve anymore" or whatever.  But now no missions will come, and if i triple-speed time to wait for missions, then
1) i get an email from Uplink saying i've been doing poorly and lose a rank
2) my Gateway shuts down
3) i get a notice saying that i got caught by a major corporation or whatever

is this to get me to register?  because i'm pretty sure that i haven't been caught at all.
I'm backing everything up, so i've tried several times.

Any ideas?

I don't think so.  You probably just got caught.  The only way to make sure you're not caught is to delete your logs at InterNIC (first bounce) with the level 4 log deleter.  :)

That feature was broken in the patch, and has yet to be fixed.  :)
