I'm having problems with RedShirt. I use it on Data.dat, did my damage to that in Text Edit, saved it, RedShirted it again, and at this point I'm unsure of what to do. I've tried:

a. Rename the file Data.dat and put it in the Data folder and try to run it
While starting up an agent, it crashes before it's done loading.

b. Try converting it to a .dat in RedShirt
Same deal as above.

What do I need to do to get the RedShirted file back to Data.dat and actually have it work in Uplink ? Is this even possible with the current version of RedShirt ?

By the way, I'm still using the demo.

You can re-redshirt it, at least with the PC versions.  I am not sure how Adriac did his RedshirtX (I assume that is what you are using).  In the PC version you do "redshirt -e data.zip data.dat".  With the new patch that should not be neccessary though.  Simply putting changes in the appropriate directory should suffice.  So gateways should go in "Uplink/data/gateways".  :)

Yes, I am using RedshirtX.

Also, when I try to change the .reds file to a .dat file again, it turns into a standard .dat file rather than an Uplink .dat file. Changing this using ResEdit does nothing to remedy this.

The .dat file should just be a .zip file after you decode it using redshirt.  To return it to a .dat file all that should be required is to re-zip the file, redshirt it, and then encode it with redshirt.  If all this doesn't work you might want to PM Adriac and ask him.  :)

OK, I just kind of gave up after that last post. And no, I did not PM Adriac, either. Didn't quite feel like it, but I probably really should.

Before I do that, though, I'd like to see if I can give this one more try.

Here's what happens, in detail, to a Redshirted file when trying to un-Redshirt it:
1. I Redshirt Data.dat with RedshirtX. It creates a new file called Data.dat.reds, which is decrypted.
2. I do what I want to with the newly spawned Data.dat.reds within TextEdit.
3. I go back to RedshirtX and click Encrypt/Decrypt Files
4. I select data.dat.reds, and hit Open.
5. Is it functional as a .zip file like you said ? Nope. Instead, it creates a new file called data.dat.reds.reds. It's re-encrypted, yes, but it doesn't work with Uplink, since it is not a .dat file.
As I've said before, all efforts to convert it back into a .dat file that is actually usable by Uplink have been fruitless.

Wow, you're doing better than me...

I can't even to get it to stay open, myself...

Try just clipping the .reds.reds part off, see if that does anything for you

Otherwise, mail This dude

I'm not sure I understand your problem entirely, but try, after decrypting Data.dat, changing the extension to ".zip" (from ".reds") and then opening it with Stuffit Expander (with Ctrl-click "Open with..."). That should give you a folder, which will work just fine in place of (or in addition to, it takes precedence) Data.dat. Then you can edit those .txt files to your heart's content.

Ah, yes. That was it.
I took the unzipped folder of .txt files, edited them all, and put the folder, still unencrypted and unzipped in the main data folder. Worked perfectly. Thanks.
