Well, you gotta know something about processors to understand this one. The G5 processor is built different. Without going into the technical details: even a 700MHz G4 wastes a 1.7Ghz Pentium 4, so a 1.42Ghz G4...... then there is the new G5's...... by far the fastest personal computers on the market :D

Quote: from Darkshine on 4:13 pm on July 12, 2003[br]All I can say is this - Yesterday I purchased a shiny new Powerbook running a 1 Ghz G4 and I must say that, despite the price (im willing to admit £2000 is steep) it is the single greatest piece of electronic equipment I have ever used. EVER.

So theres not many games? SO WHAT? If you buy a Mac for games, then obviously you are going to be unhappy, just like if you purchase a formula one car to run the kids to school...

And those putting down th 1 Ghz processor? my processor was easily competing with a 3Ghz P4, granted it wasnt QUITE as fast, but considering the battery on the P4 lasted 40 MINUTES rather than 4 hours, i really am quite happy with my choice..

The laptop is sleek, EVERYTHING WORKS, i havnt had a single error message, i dont need to go through 14 actions to do something that should only take 1 or 2, and i know this is down to both the os AND the system, the point is, Apple provide a complete intuitive, easy to use package.

And I've had more fun on my Mac than i ever have on my PC just fiddling with the settings and using a couple of music program demos..

Once you take away the 'theres no games' argument, there really isnt a leg to stand on in the 'macs are crap' argument...

Quite well said. Now, there is obviously alot more I could say, but I'm tired. I would just urge everyone on BOTH sides to gain some more knowlede before making a point, as some of the points (mostly on the PC side) are really quite untrue and uninformed.

Wow, that goes a long way towards discrediting the Mac community that does.  Posting a whole page of replies is stupid and makes you look stupid.

As for your assertions many about hardware and speed are incorrect.  Mac controls even 3rd party hardware (for the most part) and there is not all that much of it (relative to the PC hardware market).  Second while Macs are fast (especially for things like Photoshop) you can always get a faster PC, just because it is a question of a single company (Apple) against a whole slew or PC companies.  The slew will win every time.  That said I like Macs a great deal.  :)

Mac ruined it's chances at a good share of the market early on, by releasing very, very poor operating systems. (Everything before OS X was pure kludge)

OS X is very good operating system, but it is unlikely that apple will ever overcome the stigma their early mistakes created.

Edit:
Hmm, can macs do parallel processing with multiple CPUs?
If not, that's a major blow against them.

Opponiz: While your comments on what I posted are worded well, I still reserve my oppinion that comparing software to hardware is a pointless excersize.

As I mentioned in another post of mine in here, both PC's and Mac's have their pros and cons. When it comes down to it, it's personal preference, nothing more or less.

You may want to learn how to put all your points into one post though, rather then have multiple posts in one forum. You could have just used the edit key.

Also just a small addendum. Your point two: Look around in the real world for Mac applications. Ok I admit there are plenty of apps for the Mac, but most appear on PC and are then ported over. I work in IT and have for close to 4 years and have experience with both Macs and PC's. Usually it's PC first for software, the Mac port appears later.

Macs are awsome. We never get screwed; we have Escape Velocity to easy all our ailments.

But now PC has EV as well, so where does that put you.  :)

Plus we can run the original EV, and ev override in Basilisk, since the requirements for the two (very fun) games are pretty much nil.

(If you ever experience speed problems, try upping the directx thread priority in basilisk's gui settings program to 'above normal')

Hmmmmmmm....
Joining in on this is probably a mistake.  But.  Well, I am in the middle of building my own mac, the only ACTUAL apple hardware that is going into my machine is the motherboard, and it is going into a really pretty, clear, modded all to heck case, with USB 2.0 and Firewire 800 ports on the front, and the back.  I do have to say it took apple way to long to figure that one out. (sic).  Also, the new G5 is a GORGEOUS chip, and Panther is one Kick-Azz OS.  Still needs a little work, but they will work out all the kinks. As far as what one of you was saying further above, Apples previous operating systems do pale in comparison to what Jaguar is today.  But then again, look into what their developers were playing with, back in the day.  Copland, A/UX (which i have running on an OLD SE30, as a server ), and then you could always take a look at nextstep.  Also, if you want to have your PPC, without Apple's OS, then you could run various flavours of linux as well.  I have to say that i do find the PPC family just a great chip design.  Also as far as what Apple is doing lately, with the !1Ghz! bus, and the new G5, and the sleek industrial design they have been working on over the past few years, well, Jobs has been doing a great job.  Also, as far as OS's go, what about 3.1?  Or IMHO any other P0S winblows OS.  Linux geeks keep it coming, cause i can port that over pretty easy.  But as far as the rest of the world, with your windoze machines, well, I pity you.

(--I Guess I am a Mac Freak--)
(--__But NOT a bigot__--)
Thanks for listening to me rant.

Does the panther os have a linux/unix/*bsd prompt?

And most of the macintosh linux distros are pretty broken.

Yes OSX does have a command line.  :)

In my experience of Macs I have found them annyoying and too slow for my personal taste. Example: move the CD/floppy drive to the bin to eject it. ?!?!?!? That was an insane move by Apple. Since that, my expectations of Macs have fallen considerably.

Is it the same with OS X, or are you talking about macos <= 9?

Everything before os x was awful, but if os x has a command line, it can't be completely bad.
