I found the error :D

it turned out that mc was not unpacking uplink.zip correctly
after I unpacked the file with unzip it worked fine :)
(world.dat was missing if I unpacked the file with mc)

mc is Midnight Commander, run'ed from xterm/rxvt or what ever you use.

I think I read some thing a'bout the issuses with RH 6(+)
but I can't remember, try reading the patch.txt file or the readme file for linux

just being sure, you do use XWindows(KDE/Gnome) right?

I've looked a bit around for the info I was talking about,
and I've found it here, this is where the latest patch for
the game is and there is a patch to fix the RedHat 8
startup crash.

You should probably check the video and sound drivers on they system and make sure they are uptodate.  Also if you could give your system specs (Linux distro, video card, etc) it might help the troubleshooting.  :)

Stew: the Linux Distro he is using is: RedHat 8 ;)

(written on page 1)

But yes, more info about the system would be a lot more helpful :)
