I have a question about gateway making: what is considered to be a good rule of thumb for balanced pricing of gateways?

It's entirely up to you. There is no guide for pricing.

From the Ass: Half-crap equation.
1000 * FLOOR((Security Factor) * 30 * (2*(CPU slots)/(CPU slots+6) + 0.4*(MEM slots)/(MEM slots+6) * SQRT(1+Bandwidth)))
If there are 2 or more security slots, Security Factor = 2
Otherwise, Security Factor = 1
