I'm really sorry for making a topic that seems to be made every couple of months or so, but I just need some clear answers to the questions I have. Most of the forum posts I've looked at seem to talk a bit about what I needed to know, but it always seems they're leaving out details that everyone understands and I have to guess at, which doesn't seem to help me solve any of my problems.
Put simply, I can't seem to use a simple mod on Uplink, and I want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong, or missing something painfully obvious.
I don't want any gameplay changing mods, I just wanted to make or use modded gateways, mostly because there doesn't seem to be a rather good original that allows speed and tons of space.
I got the game, and running it, through Steam, and I've been hearing various things about mods for Steam, as in, you can't use mods, or can't use gameplay mods but skins and gateway mods work, etc. And I've seen things about decrypting files, guides that explain how to unzip files, etc.
I've gotten a simple gateway mod and files and tried putting them in their own data and graphic folders, but they never appeared in the game, even when I've started a new agent.
The only thing I haven't tried yet is using what is mentioned as 'Redshirt2' to decrypt the data file so I can manually insert the gateway data files, but most threads that talk about it seem to mention the program is for decrypting the usr file for gameplay modifications.
So, simply put, I just need some simple help and/or instructions about adding a modded gateway to the Uplink Steam version, if that is possible. If it's not, then I'll just make due, but as I've gotten through the game a few times now, I wanted to try to see if there was other things I could do now.
Anyway, thanks to any advice or help given in advance, and once again, sorry for making another 'how do I mod' thread, I just couldn't seem to find the right answers in my searches of the forum.
I just need some clarification, really...

You cannot mod the Steam version to the very best of my knowledge.
Inserting a gateway is two fold.
You need to first of all is extract the data.dat folder and the graphics.dat folder into the Uplink directory. Once you've done that you then dump the information about the gateway into the correct folder in the data folder, and the graphics for it into the graphics folder.
This may not work with Steam Uplink. As it is no actual mods work with Steam based Uplink.

Ah, I thought maybe you could still have modded gateways, but was getting the feeling that the Steam version didn't allow any modification no mater what I tried.
I can extract the graphic.dat file and insert it into those folders no problem, but it's the data.dat file that I can't extract anything from. Turning it into a zip doesn't seem to work like it does for the graphics.dat file. And I was thinking all that talk about Redshirt2 was what people were using to extract the files from the data.dat.
Oh well, I was hoping if I got it to work I could try making my own gateways, but I guess I'll just have to be content with what I can do currently and the other games I have from Introversion.
