ProjectX - browser-based Uplink Online type of thing
This document is for ideas for browser-based Uplink Online type of thing (thanks to WorkLord for pointing this out) codenamed `ProjectX`. This will be the project name until a better name is suggested. The project will be built using MySQL, PHP, HTML and CSS. Users register with the site and select their gateway office.
The large network (built entirely into a few databases on a large server newtork, accessable at uplink.net or somewhere) will be called the Linkscape.
In the linkscape, anyone can hack any place except 127.0.0.1 (themselves) and 192.168.0.1 (or 192.168.x.1) - their local Uplink Internal Services System. Each user will have their own IP address as 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.x.y where x is a number from (1 to m) or ((m + 1) to 2m)* - the number of gateway offices - and y is their unique idenfification number. (m is the number of gatway offices)
*both are the same thing, this allows for up to 2000 people per gateway office.
A number of high-profile servers will be run by the administrators, other people can be made to be server runners by the administrators. Servers will have a unique IP address. These servers will look much like the ones in uplink, and can have downloads.
Programs will be written in either a high-level scripting language called Linkscript, a low-level language called USC (Uplink Standard Code) or the main programs distibuted with the game written in C++. People will be able to write their own viruses, hacking software and security software.
Users will get 30-day trials, after that they have to pay £3 a month registration fee. The top 50 people pay only £2 a month, the top 10 pay £1 a month.
There will be one standard currency - credits. These will be stored in bank servers. (which can be hacked)
Companies running servers can post special missions to the Mission BBSes, and other BBS missions will be generated automatically.)
A licence agreement says that nobody may sue anybody else in real life for any incident on ProjectX, nor can they trade anything in the game for real money. Only one person may use an account.
Users are permitted to terminate an account at any time, but they must wait 2 days before they may start another one.
This will be taken further, so if you're interested in making the development team please contact me via means of a private message or shoot me an email at prophile[at]kontik[dot]net
Programming skills are desired but not required, we need writers, graphics people, sound and music managers and creators etc.

Sounds really good, I was thinking of a web based version, in this how about instead of getting a game over screen when your caught how about you spend time in jail being between an hour to a couple of days depending on the severity of the crime.
What is roughly the ETA for this?
Me and my friend The_Last_Brethren (not on the forum yet) will gladly help with any story line you wish, but being an open ended online game it would only really be able to make mini quests or World wide storyplot lines/twists. I can also do some computer graphics gateways etc if you like

Hey All.... I'm on the forums now.... And I agree with Clone's idea.... I can help out with any storylines you need.... I also like the idea of the jail time.... And say if this happens then maybe other players can hack them out again.... If they wish lol....
People say that Practice makes perfect,
But they also say that no one is perfect,
So why bother practicing?

Who is that aimed at? Me or the other guy? If your talking about my storyline skills then I'm the roleplaying king.... Or perhaps the prince.... Yeah I'm the rp prince.... Anyway I can come up with pretty much anything, whether it be stupidly funny or deadly serious. So i'd be glad to help out in that department.... But imagine Uplink online.... Aww man! It'd be like real hacking but in game.... The only punishments would be for your account.... All I'd wanna do is search day and night for a copy of revelation and then go have some fun.

And this is just a question of curiosity, but when/if the game is released, would the people who helped make it get a discount on the monthly fees or something.... I mean 3 quid is pretty damn good anyway but I'm just asking out of curiosity ya know?

A better idea would be to have no subscription fee for the alpha/beta stages and wait untill you release it properly as Version 1 until you start to charge, this way you will get more intrest in teh start as many people are put off by even the smallest charge.
Curse you cheap people!

Hi, iv just re-registered after not logging into the forum for a very long time, and forgetting my password :'(

Its a great idea and has pleanty of potential if made correctly. I had the exact same idea around a year ago and started making some http scripts in PHP.
The way i did it was by supplying each new user with a virtual gateway to there own virtual server which they can control and change. They can put up and take down a range of (fake) deamons and services within reason which are then bypassed by other users with tools (or knowledge to do with real server security). I also added things like virtual credits gained by the hour or by achiving certain amounts unauthorised access. And a system where as once a player gained access to a server they had control of it and could change the index page to indicate the current owner.
The screen shot looks interesting too, you've got me thinking about putting up the alpha code for my old game now.

I think that it would be an immense idea to put it online.
If you want some graphics for it I could probably help you because im pretty good at creating graphics.
have good knowledge in HTML and Javascript.
Plenty of knowledge as regards hacking.
