Implementing Open source distributions into Uplink... Why not?

Implement Apache into the game or atleast Apache controll into the game for file sharing. Uplink starts, Apache starts, Uplink shuts down, so does Apache.

There are lots of ideas for Multiplayer capabilities. Why not use open source software to accomplish some of these ideas?

Although I must say, what ever you do, do NOT implement IE into Uplink! Firefox would be a better idea. Browse with style in uplink ;).

What does everyone else think?

well, borrowing from my thread about multiplayer:

why would anyone want to run apache on their system? a web server in a hacking game? #1, what would you possibly share. basically all you have are program files and i dont think you should be able to share those since newbs with high level friends could end up being unstoppable. #2, its a hacking game, so no matter what everything in it would have to have some weakness, and so people would try to minimize what they have running, as in only have whats necessary-no webserver that would just open their computer up to more attacks. plus it would be quite time consuming to rebuild apache into a game format. and legal issues as well. interesting idea tho. maybe a multiplayer version could have many companies putting out software, all with dif flaws and strengths etc. if banks were impossible to hack than money would be a pretty major issue and people would have to work hard to get enough to upgrade/switch software as various critical exploits are found. example: they found a critical flaw in my "A Corp" firewall software that allows a hacker to kill me. wel ill save my money to upgrade to "NOT A Corp" brand firewall software which has no major exploit like this.

Uplink is not open source, and will not be for quite a while. If you really want to try and make a multiplayer, like so many others are and so far not suceeding, go purchase the DevCD and work from there.

from what i understood i thought he meant incorporate various open source programs like apache, linux etc. into an online multiplayer uplink-type game so users can customize their gateway. i dont think he meant "make an online uplink and make it open source"
