Okay, here's a new one - perhaps after the end of Uplink, a hacker crackdown hits from the world government/s and you start Uplink 2 as a (get this one, folks) fully legal government anti-hacker agent.  The enemy is UPLINK Inc!

But at some point you should be able to break away, perhaps through a few special/secret missions?   And end up doing some form of hacking "black ops" against the government FOR the government's best interest with Uplink's help to perpetuate its spot as *THE* company of choice for corporate intrusion specialists...

Perhaps it sounds confused, but then it's late here and the hour is not my friend.

I think adding the world's various intelligence organizations, if they're still around in 20XX, would be a neat idea.  The perhaps you could have some form of under the table investigations done by you for the agency/gov't in question, since their own can't be linked to it?

Or perhaps you could be hired by the Academic Database to investigate tampering by intelligence services making up false ids for their agents.

This would play nicely into the notion of allowing satellite control access via hack....   perhaps with military ramifications?   I can just see Black Mesa style choppers getting sent to your 1337 hackers pad because you screwed up a MilSec mission and gov't X's black ops team found out!

Which would, of course, require all sorts of new ideas for security equipment - perhaps sentry guns, a la Aliens?

If you included gov't and military groups, you could have many more special missions than before as well.... lots of stuff for the inquiring mind to go find out.

Anyway....  I could see perhaps the "bad guys & good guys" of Uplink getting renamed and reabsorbed into different groups - sort of like cells who want to keep up the older fight for the Internet on their own.

Part of the game COULD also have you hacking records to trace them so you can email/hack to interact with their new incarnations....

I think keeping the religious virus/countervirus name idea would be good, sort of like a H01Y Hacking Crusade for virtual Jerusalem, as it were....

But this is all theory until implemented, until Introversion makes up its mind...

*dials into the Uplink Internal Services Machine...*

Here's one:
Yu, as a typical Uplink agent, at one pint get an E-mail from another hacker. Something like:
There is much at stake. Our existence as hackers is threatened by all, and we must unite. If you choose not to ignore this, meet me at my private board at <insert time> at <insert IP>.
Spruce it up, I'm not that great with dramatics.
You could go, and join an alliance of hackers who's purpose you don't yet know(it is promised you will find out), taking missions for them, until one day you get caught in a goverment server by some technology, and they give you a choice:serve them against the hackers or go to jail. You could accept or PRETEND to accept, in which case you do missions they give you in a way as to help the hackers rather then the goverment.
In all of this, if you've been a bit inquisitive with yourself, checking out people and files and such, you could find Uplink corporation is involved, in a way I haven't figured out yet, but maybe as a goverment puppet or jepordized and you have to save it. Towards the end game, you could find you are allied with all three in decption, or none, or some, towards the final showdown.

Like you see, I haven't worked out the details yet. Feel free to fill em' in if you don't think this sucks.
If you think it sucks, feel free to tell me so...

You, the hacker, were doing some random bullplop when an expected mail has sent to your address.  It's from an software company (let's name it Decari Technologies), and it starts out as:

Allow me to introduce ourselves.  We are a new software company called Decari Technologies.  We have noticed that you have hacked a few servers that are known in the modern world.  How do we know...?

Enough with chit-chat, let's get down to business.  The reason we have contacted you is that we want you to test out our new beta software that is compatible with the HUD_ConnectionAnalysis, and it will create backdoors (idea was taken and altered in this section of the board) in any server.  We call this software "BAC" which stands for Backdoor Account Creation (Man, that's a bad name.  I need a new one).  If you want to accept missions from us, simply send a reply to this e-mail, and we will send you an objective for you to do.  We assure you that you will be paid.

End

If you choose to accept, it will give you your first mission:

It seems that someone leaked information of our new software.  Our sources tell us that a rival company, Cord R&D has hired a hacker and stole our beta software, and is already creating a new security prototype that will disallow backdoor creations.  Fortunately, their own servers have not been updated to their security, so you will have to hack into the server and delete the security research.  You will have to go into our file server and download our backdoor software BAC, first.

Somebody write the rest of the storyline...

I don't know... Has anyone else noticed that there is only one "Government" in the Uplink universe? Kind of far-fetched for 2010...

Scenario:
As has happened countless times over the course of human history, the unified government begins to break apart. Thanks to the globalizing influence of the Internet, the initial breakup does not occur along recognizable geographic lines, but rather takes the form of ethnic and ideological "pockets" forming like small bubbles across the planet.

The government initially takes action to quell any outright rebellion, but soon even high-ranking government officials begin to question the feasibility of a global government. People begin to once more form geographical clusters based on cultural and racial boundaries.

It is only a matter of time before the first seccesions occur, with different factions staking out territory in real-space. As the different groups with their differing agendas break away from the global government, they form their own independent military, academic, research, economic, and governing bodies. Over time, the global government is gradually weakened until it has little or no real influence and remains only as a treaty organization, serving to enforce international law while continuing to maintain the international databases. However, much like the United Nations of the Twentieth and early Twenty-First Centuries, the international government is rife with bureaucracy and can only act with the will of its more powerful member states.

With material resources now falling under the control of local governments, the newly-formed nations fall into the age-old struggle of diplomacy and warfare. Governments find themselves pitted against threats both external and internal. Government intrigue becomes commonplace in many of the new nations as they struggle to find a stable political balance. Nations resort to using any means available to gain an edge over their rivals.

Hackers are in demand more than ever now: Governments are eager to know the capabilities of their neighbors. Politicians seek to discredit their rivals and tamper with election results. Militaries put out contracts to cause havoc with enemy economic and strategic infrastructures. Resistance groups seek aid in destabalizing their local governments. And of course, the ever-present commercial and industrial corporations continually try to get ahead in any way they can.

Taking contracts against a government can be a risky business: One could easily rouse the ire of a major government, causing the remenants of the global treaty organization to hound you out. One could start a war, perhaps rivaling anything that any Protovision creation could even conceive. Or, of course, you might just crush a minor government that nobody cared about anyway.

This could take some MAJOR work to put together... Maybe a small development team to work on the story, plenty of additional characters for the international databases... (Hey, somebody has to run for office!)
But my head is already out of the clouds...

I think the game needs more short story lines in general, instead of a single long one.  I always notice how in the early missions I'll accept 2 or 3 Academic missions.  I do the mission and 2 days later take another mission to change the data back for the same person.  It'd be cool if the missions to destroy a persons life got more in depth, like the target e-mailing you with a counter offer.  I'd also like to see some research stuff put in, like you can access a government research computer and sell the documents.  Some different governments would be cool too, or at least revolutionary groups trying to overthrow the government.

what'd be nice is the ability to veiw/run any file in the game, but everythings random so that don't work to well...

I've been keeping quiet all the while, but I felt strongly enough to post MY idea for this game.

So far I like it, although I am far from completeing it, but I was rather dismayed with the lack of an engaging storyline.  The other ideas given are spectacular, I especially like the one on international espionage, because it seems to be the most plausable.

Now, here's MY deal: You, the main character and 31337 h4x0r, are employed by InterPol (UN, NATO, or whoever) as a freelance agent.  No only do you do the jobs given to you by InterPol, but you MUST also work jobs from other sources (this could give the player the chance to break away from InterPol and be put under the protection of another agency, if the player so sees fit).  If you do too many jobs from one source (even InterPol), then InterPol will really screw your ass, kick you out and claim all your stuff, leaving you with a crummy 80386 33MHz Intel with 608Mb on the HD and 2Mb of RAM.

That could add to the gameplay options, I'll add that to another string...
