Am I right in thinking I DON'T NEED the black code card?

I bought Uplink from IV last week, and downloaded the game immediately to start playing the full version. Now the CD has arrived in the post, along with the black card (which is mysteriously OUTSIDE the CD shrinkwrapping). Having trawled endless posts on this forum from folk whining about having lost their cards, I'm mystified: I've bought the game, downloaded it, and it plays fine. When will I ever need this card? Or, for that matter, the CD?

EDIT: I do realise the whole thing is likely to be some highly amusing hacker-chic joke, natch.

You will need that card whenever you need to create a new agent, or when you nuke your gateway.

The CD is a backup, in case you "loose" the download.

Don't think this is a joke. If it is, I don't get it. :? But I'm not a hacker.

The joke here is that you can't photocopy it, scan it, photograph it, w/e. So I've heard anyway. Sounds cool. I'ma find mine somewhere and do that (I transcribed the whole thing to a word document)...

But I've already created a new "Test" agent on the full game in addition to my main identity, and it never asked me for any kind of code.

The downloadable version from Introversion has the codecard screen removed. However, if you install the CD version (there's no point unless you reformat or something, once patched the CD version is exactly the same as the download version), you'll need the codecard to start each new agent.

...and in fact now I have a "Game Over" and need to start my 3rd agent, the codecard screen is back, thus rendering my whole query/thread resolved.

umm by any chance you are talking about the Z 00 code stuff when to make a new agent? well... i was searching for some uplink cool stuff and i seen all the codes on one of the sites.... nobody needs the card if you can find it on the web  i didn't need it but ehh. i wanted mods and stuff and found it by accident. so ehh ever since my cat ate my card. (realy) i am using that code. (it's a square thing like a 10*10 multiplacation table for kids) and i am doing fine. i hope it's not iligal cause i just blabed it all out

Is that the real code card? It needs to be removed from the thread.

It's funny because it's hosted on uplink.co.uk.

READ THE FAQ!!!

What is the Code Card and where can I get hold of it?

In a tribute to classic 80s video games, every boxed copy of Uplink is shipped with a black-on-black code card. This was never designed to prevent piracy and was there to remind you of the classic days of gaming. The code card text is available here.
