Fatal Error

Had this problem for ages. Tried many fixes. No success at all.
Anyway, the issue is that Uplink suffers a 'fatal error' before I can even begin the game.
At this point, I can hear the menu music in my headset, but the constant and neverending prompts that the game has a fatal error prevent me from maximising the game.
My usual solution to this is to kill uplink.exe in task manager because its easier.
Anyway, I have the steam version (1.55) of the game on my Windows 7, 64-bit machine.
I have tried running the game's exe directly and not bothering with steam but that prompts an error about steam.dll and never works.
The only information I can get from the debug file looks quite bare, and pretty much repeats itself everytime I start the game.
An (unrecognised) Uplink Internal Error has occured
