Buttons are Unresponsive

So about a week ago I tried to mod Uplink by adding a gateway. I unzipped all of the .dat files except world and data.dat and did what it said. However, when I launched it, it said that it couldn't locate any of the .dat files and crashed. I reinstalled it and the same thng happened. I had the Hacker Elite Version, and I thought maybe that was the problem, so I found the Ambrosia copy I bought a long time ago and tried installing that. It loaded and said that I had installed the 1.3 Patch and everything was working and wanted me to click okay. Which I tried, but it doesn't respond, it is like clicking an image, and is completely unresponsive. So i tried reinstalling THAT version and now it goes to the start-up page, but still won't allow me to click any buttons.

I have a Gateway Laptop with a Intel Core 2 CPU @ 1.07 GHZ, 2.00 GB RAM and a 32-bit operating system, running Windows Vista Business. (If it matters)

Can anyone tell me what is wrong and how I can fix it?
I don't really want to buy another one, because I already bought two.
