Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 Install trail

Postby Leenuks » Wed Jul 16, 2008 3:43 am

Ok I have an old verions of Uplink 1.0 on CD. EDIT: In the readme.txt it says Produced by Introversion Software so I guess its an original and not one of those rip offs like Hacker Elite etc, I hope.

What I have done so far is unzip the linux zip file from the CD......

I unzipped the linux zip install into a fresh Uplink folder in my home folder. Clicking the uplink executable did nothing.

I then found the 1.54 patch and installed it and noticed it installs to usr/local/games/uplink.
Ran uplink from the console only to get this in the log.
Loading uplink options from /home/leenuks/.uplink/options...failed

and
REDSHIRT : Failed to load file : /usr/local/games/uplink/lib/fonts/dungeon.ttf

and
REDSHIRT : Failed to load file : /usr/local/games/uplink/lib/music/bluevalley.uni

I then copied the dat files from my home/leenuks/Uplink folder to usr/local/games/uplink/lib folder.
Ran uplink from console again and got the same error with the font. I noticed that in nautilus the dat file is recognised as an archive. Clicking it opened it up so I dragged the folder out and into the lib directory.

Again I ran uplink from console and I got uplink to actually load the first screen where its connecting and then crashes.

I notice in nautilus that the data.dat file is not recognised as an archive, after clicking it all the other dat file icons change from and archive icon to a text icon and will no longer open in archive manager. STRANGE!!

Next I notice another patch version 1.55 in these forums and install that.

The above problems seem to vanish but now I get this

Version : 1.55

Any Ideas!

My own Answer

Postby Leenuks » Wed Jul 16, 2008 4:12 am

Yes Ive solved my own problem just minutes after posting above topic.. lol

OH, in my last post I didnt mention that I had to install the necessary libgtl1.2 or something like that.

Anyways I completely deleted the usr/local/games/uplink folder and also the home/leenuks/.uplink hidden folder from my system.

I then reinstalled the uplink-patch-1.55.sh patch fresh.
I then opened up the uplink.zip file from the cd and copied all the files except the executable to usr/local/games/uplink/lib directory. I skipped any files already in that directory as they were from the updated patch.

I then ran uplink from the console and whalla! it worked.
I just need to mess with the resolution as im running dual monitors and the game wanted 2048x768 screen which meant for me the bottom of the game screen is missing :( easy to fix with console commands etc.

So thanks to myself for such hard work and fast reply. LOL.

Cheers anyone who find this helpful in any way.

Still have a problem with the world map.

When I click the map it is way too big and the map is cut off at around the middle of Australia. I cant see the buttons for searching, filter connect etc.

I have tried setting +graphics_altlargemap when running the game from console but it does nothing. Same with the ingame settings, option, graphic option, tick defaultworldmap.

Also I only have a choice of 2048x768 as a screen resolution available in the game settings.
If i disable the second monitor and reboot to only have one running then uplink still thinks there is 2 monitors and runs at the same 2048x768 and half the game screen is missing.

Oh well, the trials of linux, sigh!

Uplink use SDL for the graphic part, so may want to check SDL for your problems of resolution.

Please post back is you find the solution.
