Linux, Fedora 7, x86-64: Always runs first-time game
Every time I run the game, it starts brand new like the game has never run before. Also, I keep trying to change my monitor settings and those do not save either. The users I create are still listed in the "Uplink Login" screen, but I have not tried to access one to see if it would load the game.
I made sure I had read/write permissions to all the directories in /usr/local/games (where Uplink is installed) and I even tried running the game as the root user.
I know I had to install several x86 programs (like gtk 1) just to get the game to install. Perhaps there is something else I need to run as well?
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Update
I checked and my user names (games) do save correctly, and I can start from right where I left off.
However, the game always begins like it's the first time. What I mean, exactly, is that it connects to the Uplink Public Access server to register a new agent instead of showing the Uplink login screen.
Also, it will not save any of my game preferences, such as my screen resolution.

What's the output of the following:
You should have a file called 'options' - I don't know why it isn't there. Then again, I have nothing to do with the game, I'm just on the forums and trying to help a brother out
Code: Select all
more debug.log | grep optionYou should have a file called 'options' - I don't know why it isn't there. Then again, I have nothing to do with the game, I'm just on the forums and trying to help a brother out

Options folder?
I don't think the options folder is even being created.
I don't know why this wouldn't be working....
Code: Select all
[cliff@localhost .uplink]$ dir
debug.log screenshot.bmp sudo_hacker.tmp sudo_hacker.usr usersold userstmp
[cliff@localhost .uplink]$ cd options
bash: cd: options: No such file or directory
[cliff@localhost .uplink]$ file options
options: ERROR: cannot open `options' (No such file or directory)
I don't know why this wouldn't be working....

The thing is, there *should* be lines such as the following:
and there don't appear to be. I'm outta ideas! frenchfrog, your turn
Code: Select all

No cigar
I just tried it with an empty options file with no luck. I think I may have an idea what the problem is though.
Assuming that options is one of the last files the game writes, I think it may be terminating BEFORE it saves the game options.
I'm a friggin noob on Linux, so this may be normal, but it looked suspicious so I'll throw it out there.
The part I wonder about is the last line, "X connection... broken...." Whenever the game quits, I always have to log back into X. Is the game terminating too early when I try to quit?

hmmm, good question perhaps Uplink crash when it close the main window.
I guess your options file is still at a size of 0?
Does it have the same permissions as the debug.log file?
EDIT: You could try Uplink 1.55, it contains a bit more debugging infos.

Yeah, I ran "file options" and it still returned "empty."
It also has same permissions, rw- for cliff since he is the owner.
You know, if the options file only holds the game options, and its easily edited with gedit or vi, could I just get someone elses?
The only options I really care to change at the moment is the screen resolution and I want it to stop booting a friggin new game every time.
Do you think that will be a good work around for the time being?
EDIT: Where do I get 1.55?

Options File
If you have it, I'd like to play it in 1440 x 900, 32 bit, 60 hz.
1024 x 768 doesn't seem to be working so well, but I think it could be because the refresh rate is wrong. I would try that rez in the same (32 bit/60 hz) if you don't have the wide screen option.
Where can I get 1.55?
EDIT: My monitor will also work well at 1280 x 1024, 32 bit, 60 hz
