Linux, Fedora 7, x86-64: Always runs first-time game

Postby fairbanks002 » Mon Aug 20, 2007 5:19 pm

Every time I run the game, it starts brand new like the game has never run before. Also, I keep trying to change my monitor settings and those do not save either. The users I create are still listed in the "Uplink Login" screen, but I have not tried to access one to see if it would load the game.

I made sure I had read/write permissions to all the directories in /usr/local/games (where Uplink is installed) and I even tried running the game as the root user.

I know I had to install several x86 programs (like gtk 1) just to get the game to install. Perhaps there is something else I need to run as well?

If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Update

Postby fairbanks002 » Mon Aug 20, 2007 6:06 pm

I checked and my user names (games) do save correctly, and I can start from right where I left off.

However, the game always begins like it's the first time. What I mean, exactly, is that it connects to the Uplink Public Access server to register a new agent instead of showing the Uplink login screen.

Also, it will not save any of my game preferences, such as my screen resolution.

That's strange. Do you have any files in ~/.uplink ? (I'm assuming you have permissions :P )

Files in ~/.uplink

Postby fairbanks002 » Mon Aug 20, 2007 6:17 pm

Yes. Here's the break down:

Code: Select all

[cliff@localhost .uplink]$ ls -l
total 4832
-rw-rw-r-- 1 cliff cliff   12401 2007-08-20 12:58 debug.log
-rw-rw-r-- 1 cliff cliff 2359350 2007-08-20 08:09 screenshot.bmp
-rw-rw-r-- 1 cliff cliff 1260988 2007-08-20 12:58 sudo_hacker.tmp
-rw-rw-r-- 1 cliff cliff 1260988 2007-08-20 12:58 sudo_hacker.usr

What's the output of the following:

Code: Select all

more debug.log | grep option

You should have a file called 'options' - I don't know why it isn't there. Then again, I have nothing to do with the game, I'm just on the forums and trying to help a brother out :P

The problem is probably the 'options' file. Try to delete it?

Options folder?

Postby fairbanks002 » Mon Aug 20, 2007 6:30 pm

I don't think the options folder is even being created.

Code: Select all

[cliff@localhost .uplink]$ dir
debug.log  screenshot.bmp  sudo_hacker.tmp  sudo_hacker.usr  usersold  userstmp
[cliff@localhost .uplink]$ cd options
bash: cd: options: No such file or directory
[cliff@localhost .uplink]$ file options
options: ERROR: cannot open `options' (No such file or directory)

I don't know why this wouldn't be working....

The thing is, there *should* be lines such as the following:

Code: Select all

Saving uplink options to /home/steve/.uplink/options...success

and there don't appear to be. I'm outta ideas! frenchfrog, your turn :P

I'm also out of ideas. There don't seems to be any reason the 'options' file couldn't be written.

Try 'touch options' in the ~/.uplink directory and check the permissions? Try to launch uplink with the empty 'options' file.

No cigar

Postby fairbanks002 » Mon Aug 20, 2007 6:44 pm

I just tried it with an empty options file with no luck. I think I may have an idea what the problem is though.

Assuming that options is one of the last files the game writes, I think it may be terminating BEFORE it saves the game options.

I'm a friggin noob on Linux, so this may be normal, but it looked suspicious so I'll throw it out there.

The part I wonder about is the last line, "X connection... broken...." Whenever the game quits, I always have to log back into X. Is the game terminating too early when I try to quit?

hmmm, good question perhaps Uplink crash when it close the main window.

I guess your options file is still at a size of 0?

Does it have the same permissions as the debug.log file?

EDIT: You could try Uplink 1.55, it contains a bit more debugging infos.

Yeah, I ran "file options" and it still returned "empty."

It also has same permissions, rw- for cliff since he is the owner.

You know, if the options file only holds the game options, and its easily edited with gedit or vi, could I just get someone elses?

The only options I really care to change at the moment is the screen resolution and I want it to stop booting a friggin new game every time.

Do you think that will be a good work around for the time being?

EDIT: Where do I get 1.55?

Check my previous post about Uplink 1.55 .

Problem is that the 'options' file is in binary format ...

In which resolution do you want to play Uplink? (I guess I coudl perhaps send you my options file ...)

Options File

Postby fairbanks002 » Mon Aug 20, 2007 7:02 pm

If you have it, I'd like to play it in 1440 x 900, 32 bit, 60 hz.

1024 x 768 doesn't seem to be working so well, but I think it could be because the refresh rate is wrong. I would try that rez in the same (32 bit/60 hz) if you don't have the wide screen option.

Where can I get 1.55?

EDIT: My monitor will also work well at 1280 x 1024, 32 bit, 60 hz
