Problem loading account

every time i open uplink it requires me to make a new account and never lets me use the one i have the last time i played. Is it me doing something wrong or is it the game

1) Do you have write access to the directory Uplink is installed?
2) Are your past usr files in the Uplink directory (Uplink/users I think)?
3) Are you using the latest patch?
4) Are you using the Steam or standalone version?
5) What OS are you using?
6) What exactly happens when you start the game? Does it take you to the main menu or does it only present you with the options "Register Agent" and "About Us"?

7) Try deleting the 'users/options' file and create a new agent.
