Themes not working on Ubuntu Linux 6.06

Postby le_jawa » Sun Aug 13, 2006 8:53 pm

First off, I have read a gob of theme problems on these boards, and I have seen one other person report this problem, but I haven't seen a solution. Hopefully somebody reading this will have a workaround/fix or can do something about it.

That said, here's what I'm seeing: I installed Uplink and patched to 1.31 before creating a user. I downloaded some themes (Dark Aura X and Lotus Mod being a couple of examples) and extracted them (theme directory included) to my uplink directory (~/bin/uplink). For example, I now have ~/bin/uplink/Dark Aura X and ~/bin/uplink/Lotus mod. However, when I start Uplink, it doesn't recognize any themes at all; the list under theme options is empty.

Here's what I have tried (to no avail):
removed all spaces from directory names
changed permissions on theme directories, sub-directories and files to 755.
erased my user file and started over
    erased my options file
    changed resolution and color depth

Does any of this sound familiar? Is there a fix. If so, I'd like know.

Also, If furhter information is needed, please let me know. I will be happy to provide what information I can.

How to install a new theme in Linux

Postby lunchlady55 » Fri Sep 08, 2006 2:45 pm

cd /usr/local/games/uplink/lib
unzip ./graphics.dat
cp -r /wherever/themedir/* ./graphics
zip -r graphics ./graphics
mv ./graphics.zip graphics.dat

The graphics.dat file is actually just a zipped directory. Unzip it, overwrite the default theme, and zip it back up. (The commands above should do it for you.)

I've only tried this with the "Dark Aura X" theme available here, but it seemed to work ok for me. YMMV

I'm using Gentoo, not Ubuntu, but the procedure should be about the same for any distro.

Copy the Theme Directory to ~/uplink/lib
then it works fine :)
