Hm, by "everything the read me file tells", do you mean that you've tried running the game with the "+graphics_safemode" command line argument, and have you tried renaming (or removing) the "opengl.dll" file from the game's directory? Applying the 1.31 patch was a good idea, anyway, since it fixes several problems...

And what do you mean by "debug file won't open", is the file empty, or doesn't Windows let you open it (because of file permissions)?

What system are you running the game on? From "notepad" I gather that it's some MS-Windows flavour, but which one, Windows 95/98/ME or Windows NT/2000/XP?

What exactly happens when you try to run the game, you said the text was distorted and no graphics appeared... So it starts, but you cannot play, because the graphics are messed up?

Some other people have told about problems with a voodoo 3 graphics card, but I don't remember if or how they solved that problems...

I'm using VooDoo 3 too - yes, there are some problems with some drivers, and I have a problem with "flashing mouse cursor", but Uplink runs happily! Probably, your problem is "windows-related". =)
Sorry for my terrible English. =)
