I installed uplink as written in the readme. When I start it, I get some messages in my terminal window en the game does not start. My screen is set to a very low resolution and I can only scroll to other parts of the window by moving my mouse to the borders of the screen. I already applied the 1.31 patch. I have no clue how to apply the redhat 8.0 patch and whether it could solve tis issue.
any help

RedHat 9 problem

The RedHat 8.0 patch shouldn't be necessary for RedHat 9 (Uplinks runs fine for me on RedHat 9).
One thing that could cause problems is that RedHat 9 doesn't seem to install "glut" as default (glut is the OpenGL Utility Toolkit). Try searching your RedHat CDs for a package called glut*.rpm and install it with:
rpm -Uvh glut*.rpm
(you only need the glut package, not the glut-devel package...)
The game should have created a ".uplink" (notice the dot before the name, the directory is hidden) directory in your home directory. There is a file called "debug.log" which should contain some messages that the game prints upon starting. Maybe that can shed some light on why the game doesn't start.
The readme.txt in the directory where you installed Uplink also describes some command line arguments which you can try (e.g. graphics_safemode).
If you're running KDE, then you might also try to start the game with
artsdsp ./uplink
in case you get the game to run, but don't have sound...
If you can't figure it out, then try to find the lines in the debug.log which indicate errors, and post them here...
