I have an über problem, priority 1 (well at least as I'm concerned) I have the radi-connected gateway, 400 Ghz, 48 Gq RAM and a 2 Gqs connection. I'm hacing into GCD and I'm mere minuted from recieveing word of the Revelation virus. Now hear this: One day I was hackin away and making money I get an error message saying uplink had a Fatal error and telling me to contact Introversion. When I click the OK button, Uplink shuts down, as informed. Then every time I try and restart the game I get a windows message saying it performed an illegal operation (lol) and has to close. When I click Close the same message pops up over and over again. The machine has to be manually restarted (power-off) or it freezes. Upon recieving the first error, all other programs behave the same way, performing an illegal operation. I never altered the game in any way (trainer, themes, cheats) and the message popped up unprovoked. I'm on a 500 Mhz AMD K6-2 with 196 Mb DDR RAM and windows 98 SE Registered Version.

I need help desperately!
Thank you.

I would try unistalling uplink and deleteing the Uplink directory (you can save your user file if you want).  Then reinstalling and patching.  Then try it and see if it is better.  Errors many times corrupt the user file and cause the game to crash in the manner you stated, so you may have to abandon that user.  :)

but Stew, he said his other programs are also starting to show errors like Uplink, so my question to you now now tEh_biG_DeaTh is, where did he get your copy: did you download it from the web? (ok vets, quiet now!...)

Sometimes an aborted program can mess up the display (or other) configurations and so can cause these kind of cascading errors.  That is what I assume happened (he is running 98).  Although if he got one of the web downloads that could cause it aswell.  :)

you have a point, stew but uplink doesn't install any dlls on the system directories, nor does it put any records on the Windows registry other than a blank field, so i can't figure out how a normal installation could cause his othe programs to screw up once uplink does. 10 to 1, web download?

I would have to say it screws with memory allocation tables, or maybe something like that.  It sounds like maybe it's affecting something that works with all programs, and memory would be my first guess.  Any more detail would be a bit presumptious, on my part.  Anyone else have any idea?

so it must be a driver or unstable memory-resident software related problem, if that's the case. maybe he can give us more details on what software is currently running under his hood.

The fastest way to correct this is to start another user, because I'm pretty sure your .usr file is corrupted, and can't be recovered.  If this keeps happening with several .usr files, just uninstall the game, delete the directory, and then reinstall.  If it does this again, I'd question the origin of where you got it...Internet or CD?

I got it from a friend of mine, and I'm not running any other software. My windows version IS pretty fucked up but this problem only occures when I start that specific user file. I'm running the newest update patch, and as far as I see, I guess the only thing for me to do is start a new user file.

After all, it's not THAT hard to earn 20, 000 (<-NOT sarcasm, seriously!)

Anyway, thanks for all help = ^.^ =

It can be problem with your OS. Try to reinstall the OS or just get win XP.

you think I should go back to XP? I'll try, I wasn't shure if it would work with that, but what the heck ;)
