Hey there.
I´m just beginning to be quite good and now at 15:10.33 (29.4.2010), the game always crashes. I had such problems before, for example when doubling the time. I just let the time run normal and everything was ok. But with this new problem, it always crashes even when the time runs normal. Of course this is quite frustating, because my game is advanced and I don´t want to lose my user.
Thanks for your help in advance :)

I know of no real answer to this other than starting a new user.  :)

The game shouldn't crash all the time and he shouldn't have to start a new user everytime it does.

IV needs to work out the errors and send it out in the 1.4 patch.  Simple as that.  This game contains one too many errors in the programming.

I am getting really tired of people like you Stews passing the blame around.  I mean are you a personal friend of Chris and the other members of the IV staff?  Everytime I turn around I see you responding to a complaint about bugs trying to say that it must be a problem with the game owner's computer.

There is no statistical way possible that this many people are having fatal errors or crashes with the game and it not have to do with bad coding.

All in all Uplink is a good game based on a rather unique game genre.  All they have to do is work on the coding for it.  Quit passing the blame.
When you see the flash of brillant white light, you will know that I have come for you.

You're an idiot, obviously lacking any (real) previous programming knowledge.

This specific bug is not wide spread enough to make elimination plausible [The number of post-patch occurances of this bug are low], because the programmers will not be able to reproduce it on their machines.

Do you know why that makes it difficult to debug? Probably not, being an idiot. It makes it difficult to debug, because without knowing where the error occurred, the programmers have to go through the 75k+ lines of code to find it. Now, they know it's time related, but that does little to narrow down the searching. Also, merely going through the code isn't enough, since there are literally thousands of variables that could be causing the error, and these variables are often modified in hundreds of points in a program. And some of these points might be loops, iterating hundreds of times, making non run-time debugging nearly impossible for obscure bugs.

Now, if this bug was easily reproducible, then there is no reason that the bug shouldn't be fixable, other than the programmers not having the time.

The person reporting the bug has also failed to include all relevant information that may be of use to the programmers.
Such information includes:
-Whether or not the newest patch has been installed
-Machine specs, including OS
-A list of all running processes
-Important entries from the uplink log file

I find it odd that these errors occour - since I deleted the plot-trigger-mail in the beginning :-P
It's not that I'm afriad of dying. I just don't wanna be present when it's happening.

Hmm, I think you'll have to start a new user after installing the patch.

Edit:
Which is better than most professional games, which often lose ALL compatibility with savegames from older versions when patched.

I've got a problem where the game crashes. Win 98SE, 500Mhz P3, 256 RAM, and I get no graphics glitches at all using a TNT2 in 1024x768. I'm also using a SB Live! sound card and have installed patch to v1.31. The time on the game is 20:21:08 on 18th May 2010 in the game, and I've installed the Gateway OS mod, world map mod, and have changed the colour of the gateways  (+ added a couple more).I get the problem only when fast forwarding, which I use to get more jobs to appear on the Internal Services Machine. HELP!!!

Wanna give a dump of the debug log file?
[Just the part related to the crash though, the file in it's entirety can be pretty large]

I could suggest something although I'm afraid it sounds so simple, aw hell, I'll do it anyway!  Might you tr NOT fast forwarding?  That is probably what makes the game crash.
welcome to hell
enjoy your stay in hell
etc.

TheArchangel:  I did not say it was his computer.  All I said was the only known fix is to start a new user.  The saved games get corrupted very easily (yes this is a problem with the game, not the computer) and so starting a new one is generally all you can do.  I don't know Chris or anyone at IV.  If I could fix the code I would, but as I don't have the code and don't work for IV I can't, so all I can do is offer the fixes that the gamer can do.  I am not shifting blame, I am simply trying to help people enjoy the game.  With an independant game like this you have to do what you can to get it to work, if that involves starting a new user, or configuring hardware and drivers so that the game likes it then so be it, that is the cost of playing the game.  The only alternative is to not to play the game at all, but if that was the case why buy it in the first place?  Sure IV has some bugs to fix, but until they do I for one am going to keep helping people play it as is.
