I can play uplink for a time (not set) but then a message will appear saying fatal error and uplink will now be closed. i cannot then play as that agent without this message appearing. what can i do to stop this and fix it?

I can only assume that you have a corrupted user. Your only alternative from the information that I can see is to start a new user. Make sure that you have the latest patch, and have looked through the forum to see if there any fixes for your problem.
