If you're still reading this, I had the same problem and found a solution.
As a test, I tried replying with a random made up name and got the exact same email in response that they believed my made up name received the transfer but was not the actual hacker, despite the mission not having anything to do with banks. So that seems to simply be the default "mission NOT complete" response in this case.
What I did at this point was to get into the hacker's personal computer. I read their email and checked their files. They had only one file on their computer and it was the same file that was originally stolen from the mission employer's computer system. I copied the file from, decrypted it, and included it as an attachment along with the hackers name. This time I was told that the mission was complete and received payment.

My own experience on this - There is more than one hacker out there. If you get lucky you may even undelete and track the wrong guy. That happened to me and I got the same nonsense email reply.
To resolve it, I went back a node or 2 and rechecked the connection I was looking at matched the previous node address in the chain as well. Turns out there were two connections next to each other from two different hackers..
The bottom line is, while tracing a hacker, a reply saying "this guy got the money, he's not the hacker" actually means "he had nothing to do with it". Also the age of the mission just doesn't matter, these guys use version 3 deleter so you can always recover the logs. Assuming you don't wipe them out accidentally yourself.
