What affects the missions that appear?

Postby Professor Paul1290 » Sat Nov 20, 2010 5:03 pm

This might be a silly question, but aside from random chance, is there anything else in the game that affects what missions you get?

It seems that for a lot of my games after a certain amount of time has passed, a certain mission types will seem to really dominate the list. It's not always the same types between games.

For example, in my last game it got to the point where nearly all the available missions were to shut down mainframes, with other mission types rarely appearing. In my current game it seems to be all about framing people for crimes.

Is it normal for this to happen?

From what I'm reading on the forums, I'm getting the impression that the missions should be a bit more random than this.
I'm starting to think perhaps I'm either consistently doing something to cause the missions to strongly lean towards certain types or maybe the missions follow trends that last a really long time and I'm not being patient enough.

I think it is mostly random although, I think your neuomancer rating affects it a little too, so if you perform framings and actions against other hackers thats what you get more of, and vice versa

My observation is that when your Neuromancer rating is bad(Untrustworthy, Sociopathic, etc) you cannot accept missions like "Trace a hacker who recently broke into our systems" and when it is good(Aggressive, Revolutionary etc) then you cannot accept the "destroy a system" missions.
Maybe the game omits those mission after your Neuromancer rating goes high on either side(Like to show "other hackers accepted them").

What are you on about?

First off, you get ratings like aggressive and revolutionary for destroying systems. Why would you be unable to accept those missions with such a rating? You should always be able to accept "destroy a system" missions, no matter what your neuromancer rating is.

Second, the reason that you can't take the "trace a hacker" missions is that those missions are tracing you. Whenever you hack a server, the owners of that server put out a mission to have you traced. The game knows that you are the hacker being traced, so won't let you accept the mission. It has nothing to do with your neuromancer rating.

There are only three reasons that you should ever be unable to accept a mission: (1) your rating is not high enough (though you can consult the client, then accept); (2) you have a criminal record (hack the GCD to clear yourself); or (3) it is a trace the hacker mission, and you are the hacker.

cst1992: I think that most of us appreciate your enthusiasm, but you really need to figure out when it is appropriate to post, and what is appropriate to post. You seem to be relatively new to the game, and you seem to think that you know more about how it works than you really do. You are also new to the forums, and don't really seem to understand that, for instance, bumping long dead topics is not generally smiled upon. I suggest that you lurk a bit more, and learn more about the game, before you continue posting.

Professor Paul1290: My understanding is that the missions are basically random. That a certain kind of mission dominates the boards is not unexpected, however. One of the features of randomness is that streaks are to be expected. Then you have to factor in your own observer bias, and account for the fact that your differential selection of missions to accept is going to affect what is on the list. Finally, for the reasons noted above, trace the hacker missions will be more common than other mission types (unless you are not accepting and completing any missions).
