After having the game work fine for a good long while, suddenly, I was getting the infamous "fatal error" when I started Uplink. So, naturally, I Googled the problem. Apparently the given solution to this issue when reinstallation alone fails, is to reinstall, then without launching the game, immediately patch it.
So I go to the Introversion site, download the available patch for Windows, run it, and when it asks me to select the directory where Uplink is installed, I do, but I can't hit the okay button and progress the installation to fix the problem. I've looked around for solutions to this issue, but I've come up dry. Can anybody give me a concrete solution for how to get the game working again?

Where's your copy of Uplink from?
Re: Problem playing/patching
It's a legal copy bought off Steam.

Steam will always give you the latest version. Never try to apply a manual patch to a Steam game that isn't specifically marked to be compatible with the Steam version of its respective game.
What I'd suggest you do is to uninstall Uplink through Steam and then shut down steam; back up your save file (if you have one) and then completely remove the Uplink folder from steamapps. Make a search in steam/steamapps/ and completely delete all folders and content of the game. There might be some under your username and there might be one under common, and there might be some in just the steamapps folder itself. There might even be a .gcf file.
Then open Steam again and reinstall Uplink. Make sure it works before trying to put your save file back in.
If this method doesn't work (without the backed-up save file), then post your computer specs and operating system.

That did the trick. Don't know why I didn't think to do that myself, but the game is working now anyway. Thanks a lot man.
