Uplink was originally going to have a 3D interface, but it was crap so in the end it was scrapped for the 2D interface.

I have played a 3D hacking game (I wouldn't go so far as to call it an outright sim, though) called AI Wars: The Awakening.
You can see what they're about at their site: http://aiwars.com

Isnt real hacking done in text?

It makes no sense to make a 3d hacking sim.

Text is just a representation of the 1s and 0s computers actually deal with. 3D graphics could quite feasibly represent them too.

It wouldn't be a sim, but hacking a system would be the in-game intent, much like in it is Uplink, which is also about as realistic as a headshot making your entire leg fall off.

This makes kinda the same sense as playing a 3D shooter in text mode ;)

Indeed, as a 3D shooter is nothing more than a guys running around and shooting being represented as guys running around and shooting. It can totally be effectively represented in text in a fun and exciting way!

I'm going to try this thing called "Textmode Quake". It's either going to be a rocket blast, or a disater in the making.
