Swedish Couple Names Baby "Google"

Postby xMs » Sat Oct 22, 2005 11:31 pm

A Swedish couple have chosen to name their first born son Google, after the well-used search engine.

The Swedish tax authority, which normally frowns on unusal names, had no objections. "They just thought it was funny," Elias told the newspaper.

Elias Kai, quoted in The Local, an English-Langugage Swedish Newspaper, says he's a "great fan" of the search engine, but the name means more to him than that, "the word means 1 followed by 100 zeroes, and I want my son to have lots of friends". Elias is in fact mistakenly referring to the word Googol.

Google's weblog, on hearing the news said, "We wish him long life and good health, and hope his schoolmates aren't too hard on him".

Google Kai already has his own website, at http://www.google-kai.com/

Could be worse. They could have named their kid eBay, or Yahoo! ... or HotPornSite.
(Best not to think about that last one.)

It raises some interesting legal questions though, concerning the use of trademarks. What if once the kid had grown up they wanted to start a company, would they be allowed to use their name in the name of the company? Think back to Mike Rowe Soft

Not if it was related to computers or the internet. This case would be even more straight forward than the Mike Rowe case as this kid is actually named after Google. :)

Okay, so this isn't as...... unusual as 'Google', but my local newspaper runs a 'Bright Babes' competition, which is basically just 'Cute' todlers competition.

Anyway, every week there has to be at least 2, fucking stupid names in it

*opens paper*

Ah, look. A wee boy called Koby-Mark :?

And a girl called Mia-Alyssa.

Interesting.

Google must be stopped.

They're growing too powerful. When we're all stuck using GoogleOS, you'll agree with me, too.

Why?

a) GoogleOS might be good. If it ever exists, which I doubt, it'll probably be a Linux distro rather than a unique OS. Google might have the resources to build a really good linux distro

b) You can't be 'stuck' using an OS. If you don't like the OS you're using, switch. There are a fair few in existance to choose from.
