But he's died and gone from this world of extreme suffering to the paradise of heaven, surely a cause for celebration?

I think you mean a wake Quantum Particle, those are celebrations of the persons life, and generally are a great party. However a persons death is not something trivial, even if people die every day.

slightly OT, but have you noticed that there is someone praying out loud by his body 24 hours a day? I thought Jesus was pretty clear about that being a bad idea.

St Matthew (6.5) wrote:And when ye pray ye shall not be as the hypocrites that love to stand and pray in the synagogues and corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men : Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But thou, when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber and shut the door, pray to thy father in secret; and thy father who seeth in secret will repay thee.

I'm not sure I approve of the pompus circus that is being made out of the death of this man. It represents the very worst excesses of High-Church nonsence. He should be allowed to rest in peace.

It's called hypocricy doormat, something the Catholic Church is no stranger to.

I don't see where the hypocracy is. . . I do see someone selectively quoting and interpreting the Bible though. . . This passage is generally reguarded to refer to those who pray just so others will think they righteous. It almost certainly does not mean public prayer is wrong (after all Jesus himself lead public prayers).

Seletively quoting huh? Ok, lets play that game:

St Matthew (6.7) wrote:And, when you are praying, enter into thy chamber and, having shut the door, pray to thy father in secret."

It's a frequently repeated statement, in more than one Gospel.
"Woe to ye, oh hypocites."

And how about:

St Matthew (23.5-9) wrote:And all their works they do for to be seen of men. For they make their phylacteries broad and enlarge their fringes. And they love the first places at feasts and the first chairs in the synagogoues, And salutations in the marketplace-place, and to be called by men, Rabbi. But be not you called Rabbi. For one is your master, and all are your brethren. And call none your father upon earth; for one is your Father, who is in heaven.

A public prayer is not the same thing. I'm no theological expert, but I can think of no occation when Jesus gave a private prayer out loud (with one notable exception; "Father forgive them, they know not what they do."), and on the occations when he led prayer, It was prefaced with "pray you in this fashion". He gave readings in the synagogoue, but that again is not the same thing.

stewsburntmonkey wrote:reguarded to refer to those who pray just so others will think they righteous

Call me a non-believer, but I doubt John Paul can hear them, God can always hear them, it isn't a Respondu, so why are they praying out loud?
