What's your computer called?

Postby Darkshine » Sun Oct 31, 2004 7:21 pm

Mac users are able to name their computer by fiddling with some settings, this is the name that appears on all access logs, library items, etc.

But I was just wondering if other people name their PCs or whatever?

My computer is called Deceptacon. Just curious what everyone elses were!

Well, I have 5 working computers in my house. 4 of them are connected to the LAN, and hence they have a network name.
So I'll tell you the names we call them, as well as their network names. And the reason for both.

1) Pentium 130Mhz. Initially it was a 2.8.6, which we bought in 1991. The it was replaced by a 3.8.6, and only lately by a 130Mhz. It's not connected to the network, and we call it "the ancient computer", for obvious reasons.

2) Pentium 200Mhz. It serves as a router for the entire network. it's network name is "Main-computer", since it was given to it in the time it was indeed the main one in the house (and now it sort of got its role back). We simply it "the router".

3) Pentium 866Mhz. When we bought our new computer, this one went over to me. The network name is "Big-computer" (after "main" was taken, we had to invent something to tell it's even more main than the main...). We call it "Michael's computer" (i call it "my computer", naturally).

4) Athlon 64 3000+. The pride. Network name is "Athlon-computer", and we call it "new computer".

5) Pentium 4, 2.something. It's actually my grandfather's computer, but he hasn't got place for it at home, so it stays at our house. I use it to play with Photoshop from time to time. Network name is "Khavin-computer" (my grandfather's last name), and we call it simply "grandpa's computer".

Well, that's basically it.
I haven't got the slightest idea why anyone may way to read this, but eh...

I name mine LLama Mk [number], with the number increasing every time I get a major upgrade (mainly CPU or GFX). Currently, I have the LLama Mk VI (six).

The one I'm using now is called MINIMOOSE (and it's organisation name is Best Heroes Ever, the #Uplink City of Heroes Super Group).
There's UMA, Louise, Holly (Named after Red Dwarf) and a laptop that I think is called Isla.

My first PC named using this theme (Duron 800): Naboo - It was funky
The box I used to play with 2k server on: Tatooine - It was next to \\Naboo, and it was the logical next name
The old Dan branded box I was given a while ago: Dantooine - It used to do really important stuff
The 486 laptop that kinda self destructed: Alderaan - Named post-humously.
The P200 I was given for spares or repairs: Endor - Didn't last. Ended up merging it with Tatooine
My main box: Geniosis - Big important box that does funky cool stuff
My iBook: Zion - totally different architecture, totally different name

That goes without saying!

My computer is called 'SUPER'. My old Duron 800 was 'Omega', I had another called 'snail' (350MHz AMD K6-2 with a Voodoo 2) and then a 486 laptop called 'slug'.
Nakatomi is coming
