In the poll.
Well, my opinion: It has AWESOME graphics. But for the contrast, it has a very bad gameplay. Why?
1) They invested too much in making the game scary as hell. But being scary is quite rarely being fun.
2) No map = BAD. I often spent way too much time in finding where the heck am I suppoesd to be going, and walking in circles in all the same places (they're all dark and metal, how am I supposed to tell where I am?)
I was actually happy to finally see an enemy - it meant I wasn't here before. And it's not good when you're happy to see a mad zombie walking at you.
3) There's no fun in the battle. You mostly just shoot in all directions, because you can't understand who's hitting you, where you are, or even at what direction you're looking at the moment.
4) It's trying to be storyline-driven, but ends up being boring as hell, or just plain dumb.
First of all, there are many many logical defects, that are absolutely normal for a shoot-'em-all-and-don't-ask-questions game, but aren't good in a game which is trying to create a belivable world. For example: how come a soldier in the 22nd century hasn't got some night vision stuff? Why can't I hold a gun with a flashlight? How come the droids are so powerful, yet everybody got slaughtered? They can just release 20 droids like this, and all hell can go to hell.
Second of all, there's little fun in reading e-mails of other people. It's kinda fun in the beginning, when you see all those e-mails about "strange things" and all... but eventually, you simply try to look for the correct password among the piles of useless information.

Hm, I found it quite easy to find my way around. It's quite linear so there's not much chance of walking down one route to bring you back to where you started.

Try opening your eyes :p

I personally think that not being able to carry a gun while using the flashlight is a brilliant idea. I know that loads of people have complained about it but I find that it makes the whole game much more tense. It creates a dilemma...do you walk around unprotected but being able to see or do you have your gun but have no idea what's lurking in the shadows? Nothing is worse than seeing the eyes of an Imp lurking in front of you...
You're right, the game isn't brilliant. But I think that it's a bit better than you're making it out to be. :)

1) I think I agree with what Icepick wrote in his Icebox (can't be arsed to quote that at the moment). I prefer shooters like RTCW. I love being a sniper. I like making accurate work, and aiming at the target. I DON'T like madly shooting in all directions, while I'm unable to see what the fuck is hitting me.
2) Darksun - well, yeah, precicely. So why do they put in all those e-mails and lectures and videos and all? It makes you expect the game to be storyline-driven, with a big, complex and LOGICAL world.
I don't complain about Doom 1-2 having logical defects and dumb storyline - because they're plain fun shooters.
So I ask Id to decide what they want to do. Though it doesn't look like storyline is their strong part, so I guess they should stick to simple shooters.
And in conclusion: If I have to choose a Doom to play, I choose the 1st two.
And if I have to choose a shooter in general, I choose RTCW.
P.S. Where did the poll go? Did Icepick start removing extra polls or something?

But Doom 3 is just a pretty, simple shooter!

Well, it's obvious this isn't what they were trying to do. With all those e-mails (somebody actually wrote them, you know), movies, lectures, cinematics. it looks like they were trying to do make a believable world and a good storyline. I don't recall Doom 1-2 having tons of reading material... actually, I barely recall any shooter having that much reading material.
That's why I think Id weren't trying to create just a "simple" shooter, but in fact they were trying to create a rather complex one. And failed,

Fine, so they weren't trying to do that. In this case, there's too much storyline there for a simple shooter, that interrupt the "feel" of the game. When I'm walking along a dark and creepy corridor, I really don't want to start searching some poor guy's e-mails and logs to find out the password to the box where armour is kept. I'd just like to take the aromour, and go on with killing the next bunch of zombies.
[EDIT]And another thing to back my point - when I showed Doom3 to a friend of mine, and he just started palying it, he asked in surprise, "what, they made it like an adventure game?"
That's not a good start for a simple shooter. [/EDIT]
