Sigh. I take it you are running without a firewall? In this day and age, suicide. Even on a dial-up connection. Got one. www.zonelabs.com . And get the windows updates as well, but Im sure you knew that.
Anyway, on to removal. Turn off system restore and then run the fixtool. Also, I have heard that it needs to be run in safe mode, but Ive never had any problems with running it in normal. Mind you, I've also never gotten an XP machine infected by Blaster.

Make sure you have the latest of the windows updates
I know a good signature when I steal one.

He only installed it a few hours ago; give him a break.
Anyway, because of the incredible lack of security in even the later releases of Windows, I'd suggest keeping the MSBlaster fix available on a CD or floppy and keeping the system unplugged until you install it. You can find the fix here:

2000: http://tinyurl.com/h8fy
Edit: Changed the URLs to TinyURLs.

when the shutdown window appears telling you it will shut down in X secs, go into command and type shutdown -a
it should stop the system shutdown.
then stop the messenger service from running (this will also disable netsends to appear on your computer) it can be done trough the Control Panel then system services (cant really remember, and are on school so i cant access the control panel to check, just check google for "messenger disable +net send" should give you something to go by)
after you cancel the messenger service from running, and stop the blaster from shutting down the computer, then just run "fixblast.exe" can be gotten from most anti-virus homepages.
after you have scanned your Hard Drive update windows and get a firewall (may be troublesome at LANs exc exc, but well worth the time) and update your antivirus software (if you dont have any search google for Panda Anti Virus, its free (one with 30 day trial and private use is free, if memory serves me right).
Tadaa!
you removed blaster AND did a security update ^^
(remember to update antivirus softwares you have daily (or atleast weekly) and do a full scan once a week or so, just set it on at night if you got a large HD.)
