Computer networking science is something that has always fasicinated me, But for the sake of perspective, can someone kinda fill me in on how this stuff is done in the real world as opposed to uplink (and don't worry, I don't plan on trying any of this, I'm not stupid, just intriged as to how this stuff is done in the real world)? IE bouncing calls, password breakers and the like. And add examples of some progs, I mean, its hard to believe that thisstuff exsists. And do corporations realy hire hackers to do their dirty work for them? Its all so cool...

Zellforever: While this is a forum about a hacking game, it is not a place that people will just freely give out knowledge regarding "real" hacking, or even admit to knowing it. The best you can do is use google and search for a few sites, or learn how to use UNIX and Linux.
Uplink help: Read the FAQ
There are also some books on the subject
I reccomend 'A complete h@ckers handbook' by Dr K
It has some information on the basics of hacking, as well as history and ethics of hacking, other net issues and general computer stuff
As for things in the game reflected in real life, well:
Bouncing can be done to some extent, it involves routing through several shells. Its not like in the game
Password crackers do exist, both dictionary and brute force. However, very few passwords can be cracked one letter at a time, making brute forcing very slow. It's not like in the game

Well, hacking into something in real life thats normal security:
- around 1:100000 in getting the password
- real people are more intelligent.
- getting through the security is around 1:10000
- did I forget that if there is tracing, then it will go much faster?
- If you've just hacked something, I suggest that you throw your pc away as someone is bound to find out.
the sucess rate of getting something good, not getting caught and all that is probably around:
1:100000000000000000000
Or basically nearly impossible.
*and no, the NSA do not exist*
(Nsa is from a film: Public Enemy No. 1 or something)
I wish you a happy time in jail if you try. Although, I don't think that they'll try and get you if you got to the password box, and had a try. They might, not sure...

I will now attempt to reuse the "what's a signature" joke.

I'll publicly admit I have "real" hacking experience. After all, what's so bad about it?

Heh, throwing out your computer will not protect you if you have hacked something.
The NSA does exist, www.nsa.gov .

Bah, the NSA doesn't exist... They're just made up for Splinter Cell...
Seriously, though, the NSA is generally accepted to have the most powerful computing equipment - including some of the most brilliant people - anywhere in teh world

the NSA do exist as was posted but could also stand for National Security Advisor(NSA) to the president of the USA.
if you want to to learn about hacking etc i suugest you look at purchasing a program called Steganos 5 this is a cd that provides the person with security systems to try and hack. it comes with all the stuff you need. i dont personally own this program but ive heard its good.
If you dont want to do this there are several websites on the internet that test you by making you use hex editors etc to try and crack through puzzles etc. i hope this is an insight for you.
