I thought after the shadow home secretary in the UK expressed his personal view that the death penalty should be re-introduced that it would be interesting to have a debate on this especially as there are many young ppl from around the world who log into the forum.  I shall enter my view on the matter later.

Hmm, it depends on whether or not the cost of going through the appeal system is greater than the cost of keeping the said prisoner in jail for the rest of his/her life.

If yes, then I say no to the death penalty.

Otherwise, yes.

Coming from the only "civilized" county that still enforces the death penalty, I still think it's morally wrong. It's too easy to kill an innocent person this way...

I agree.
Im not religious but i think that humans shouldn't take other humans life, unless in selfe-defense.
And also, you are allways in pain when you are killed in an electric chair.

From both an economic and social point of view the death penalty makes no sense.  It costs more to execute a person than keep them in jail for the rest of their life, and the moral ground of an eye for an eye is rather shaky to say the least.  Also even the chance of killing innocents should be enough to sway most people.  :)

Yes, Jackmn has a point. Around here, the cost to kill a person is over 5 times the price to just throw him in the clink to rot. It makes one wonder why... I mean, you would remove the guy from socieity in both cases, anyway...

And as SBM said, the moral ground of an eye for an eye is rather shaky. At best, it's shaky. If the law is "Thou shall not kill," should that be universal?

And to PTM, I don't think "the chair" is permitted anymore in the US. The most popular method is by lethal injection, and it's a near guarantee for it to be letal.

To clear up this matter of whether or not the "chair" is used in the US, here is this chart from a 1998 article from Popular Mechanics.  Image

That's 5 years ago, but I'd be willing to bet that the chair is still around.

The whole article is about various modes of death throught the hands of the state.  And you can find it here.

Well, in my country we don't have death penalty.
And that is what I think is right.
To many innocent people have died already...

While most of America has the death penalty there are only a couple of states that actually use it.  :)

In what way is tieing a rope around someone's neck and dangling them off a bridge expensive?

The death penality is pointless. It doesn't work as a deterrant, and there are moral and economical issues that oughtweigh any benifits that a death penality could bring.
