I agree with the points about scriptkiddies, they are annoying.
I was inspired by uplink to go into hacking, and it took me quite a while before I could call myself a hacker (in fact, only a few months ago). I do not claim to know everything about everything, but I am at least continually researching and learning more, which is what hacking is really about.

Now would be a good time to close the thread.... *cough*

my 2 cents:

I think games (in general, not just Uplink) stop violence to a certain extent because it allows people to let loose a side of them that most of us have, to one extreme or another, that wouldn't exactly have a postive effect on society. obviously there will be exceptions but those that are influenced by games so much that they have to kill or hurt someone, or try hacking, etc etc are wrong in the head anyway..... all these campaigns against violent games get right on my tits to be honest.....

oh and Phydaux, the points wasn't that uplink is teaching people how to hack or showing them what tools to use or anything like that, more whether it could influence people to try hacking for real.......

the US army thing is complete rubbish. i've heard they use all sorts of games to help train soldiers, but even then i think half of those stories are complete rubbish

just for the soul purpose of getting involved in this conversation, I think I'll throw my "two cents" into the ring.

First off, I agree with the point that it depends on peoples' maturity as to whether they will do whats in the game. I also might add that the reason they are playing the game may have an impact, for example, If your playing QUAKE, DOOM, halflife, etc, just for the fun and entertainment of the game, you have to relate that to the situation, would anyone really play a good shooter game and then go out and kill people for the fun of it? most people should have some more motivation to get involved with breaking the law. now for uplink's case, people may play the game for entertainment and then want to hack for entertainment, the only thing they'll do is get frustrated when they can't do it, and if they learn how to hack (in real life) they will also most likely learn to tame their "thirst for entertainment" in breaking the law. they'd need more motivation to go out and break the law, i vote "no" on this subject

i guess the general opinion is that most games and films (esp with violence) don't inspire any of us, but i agree with the person who said someone is bound to try a little bit of hacking for "fun" - mostly harmless of course

the argument against games in this is pretty...... non-existent really. i wonder how the hell you can provide evidence for this? do people start sueing introversion because they got hacked by someone who just happened to own Uplink? of course not, that would be a bit ridiculous. and why do games suffer from this most? why don't people go campaign against shops that sell toy guns?
