Real hacking is nothing like uplink

You seriously need a reality check

You have to agree that most people who play Uplink are under 18 years (like me), and very young ones (I'm speaking under 15 here) might get the wrong idea and do a google search for password crackers and such.... we did get several posts by people that were surprised to find InterNIC on the net

...I know because it happened to me too (I was 15 1/2 back then), I got an interest in sites like Trytohack.nl and scripting/coding.... I think it's what brought me into programming in the first place (aside from HTML and QBASIC) and also launched my first DOS game, The Network....

....it does have a bit of influence. But it wears off (with everyone in the right mind, that is).

Well, that's my slice of the salami.

I agree to Starfyre - the amount of influence a popular hacking game such as Uplink has on its fans depends on their personality and maturity. Only a very low percentage of people are that much affected by actions and gameplay. Otherwise we would be in trouble... Imagine everyone who plays violent games, i. e. UT2003 and GTA, would go grab a weapon and run out on the streets, shooting everything that gets in their way.

There are some who'd like to try "real" hacking after playing Uplink, and some may eventually become script kiddies - but maybe only for a limited period of time (until "it wears off", as Starfyre wrote).

Oh, and of course most of those who play hacking games are somehow interested in the topic in general. For those, Uplink is an opportunity to experience the thrill of being a cyber criminal without the danger of getting arrested for a crime in real life... much like in GTA and similar games, where you are able to set your "evil side" free (and we all have such an evil side in us ;)).

Yes but GTA is much more realistic than Uplink.
