That was the most degrading experience of my life. I continually missed hints that were clearly supposed to be less hints than brick walls forcing me in the right direction. I spent:

5 minutes trying to find the '.file' extension's main use. Yes, there is one, PC-based no less, and I also spent a little time following that up. Feel free to die laughing - I know I would if the roles were reversed.

5 minutes following up a wild goose chase (which I could have downloaded a program to follow up. The program was very close to hand and would have shortened the process to about 30 seconds). I even kept going after it became obvious that it was a wild goose chase, rationalizing that it may be a clever trick!

10 minutes following what I thought was a wild goose chase but was the only thing I could thing of. It wasn't a wild goose chase, but I completely missed what I was supposed to find.

5 minutes thinking of something else to do, hitting on the right thing by pure chance and finding the overwhelming hint [or hints - I don't want to get DQ'd] that I missed telling me exactly what I had to do to decode the file.

20 minutes downloading and installing some software that I only needed to decode the file inside my wildest hallucinations.

5 minutes trying to cajole the software into working, failing horribly, and moving towards punching my keyboard. The help files for the software didn't work either.

5 minutes cursing quietly (if my parents hadn't been asleep in the next room then rest assured, I would have been cursing loudly), then coming up with a new plan which would be the key to cracking the code.

10 seconds cracking the code.

5 minutes of trying (and failing) to remember my Challenge password so I could use the method I found. I ended up brute-forcing it by using all the passwords I could possibly have tried - not working out that the password checker was case sensitive until the bitter end, naturally.

My name is A. J. Pitr* and I am a pathetic loser. Feel free to laugh.

*Real name censored due to paranoia.

Reminds me of a question from The Spark's untelligence test (no, that's not a typo):

"A philosophical question: when you find something you've been missing, why is it always in the last place you look?

A. Because I am an unlucky person.
B. Because I stop looking once I find it.
C. Because it's so damn small and I have bad vision.
D. Because God willed it that way.
E. Actually, you're wrong. I'm stupid enough to keep looking once I find it.

Meh... About 300 people signed up. So far I notice five victory posts, counting yours and mine. I figure it's going to go like this:

150 people didn't think the IRL section would be this difficult and end up failing the Qualifier.
125 people will eventually get it done, but can't work at midnight for one reason or another.
22 people will be up at midnight, but take 1-2 hours due to sleep deprivation. *yay*
3 people will do it in about 30 seconds.

I really can't think of anything lower than using both a religion and a lifestyle as insults in one sentence. I'm lost for words. If anyone else reading this thread has the mental ability, please flame prozak for me.

And 150+125+22+3 = 300, not 200. I was basing it on the last update I saw with the number given for entrants. Thus amended:

200 can't do it
167 can't stay up 'til midnight
29 take ages due to sleep deprivation
4 do it in 30 seconds

I'm crawling to bed now...
