I'm startin to really enjoy this thread. And I'd like to put my thoughts in too lol Perhaps hacking is in the eye of the hacker. Someone who gains illegal acess to a system and destroys important data will call himself a hacker, regardless of how he is seen by others. An excellent programmer who can manipulate programming tools like a pen and paper will also call himself a hacker. So, they both are called Hackers, but both do sifferent things. Script Kiddies and Virus makers are the same. They call themselves hackers too. Continuing on from Stews post, society's faveourit thing is to assume everything. When a person says hacker, society thinks a cyber criminal because that is what the media has brought up. But when a programmer says hacker to other programmers, that isn't thought at all. So regardless of who is a cracker or hacker, script kiddie, virus maker or anything like that, "hacker" can mean a various amount of things and perhaps this debate will not be resolved.

Quote: from Adriac on 6:17 am on July 19, 2003[br]I realize my semantics could have been better, and I apologize for that if anyone took offense (newb, shouting, etc)... But nevertheless.

To quote Strong Bad, "The internet is a place where absolutely nothing happens." In an issue such as this- namely the definition of a controversial word -it's basically no more than everyone saying their own opinion over and over in different words and at varying levels of detail. This was fun maybe 8 months ago, but by now I figure most if not all of the +4 Insightfuls are -1 Redundant.

And that annoys me.

[edit]
Ironically enough, this is the same statement as before except with different words and to a greater level of detail.

Oops.

Semantics? Your semantics were fine; you meant full well to insult us. (As a clarification "semantics" is generaly used to mean the study of word useage, not the word usage itself. I just find it funny that a "hacker" would use "semantics" in a thread in which we have been argueing the semantic of "hacker".)
I think the arguement is fun right now, regaurdless of the state eight months ago, and if you find it annoying, wait, let me repeat myself, DO NOT READ IT. But as you continue to read and respond to it, I can only assume you derive some pleasure from condemning us; you are very welcome my friend.
My point relates not to the definition of any one word, this arguement has transcended any one word to an arguement concerning the nature of word definition: I belive that beyond anything finite, a definition relates to the audiance rather than the user of said word. So it would therefore be impossible to determine any one definition.

In... sult... you?

Eeh, where? I think I said I didn't mean to offend anyone?

I don't have to read it, but it is called to my attention every time I load the forum. I haven't read it, aside from a bit of the first post and a bit of the recent ones. But it still annoys me, because I have to think about it.

Aren't you annoyed by the repetition of pop music, or Hollywood, or sci-fi novels despite not having to hear/see/read them?

I am reading yours; I like them; they summerize the arguement well. But I am a bit preoccupied with this fellow who seems to have a problem with our carrieing on, but is somewhat deficent in shuting himself up. And to that fellow: if you did not read it why in the name of chaos are you responding to it? Stop being dumb.

I seem to be corresponding with a certain person who for some reason prefers not to refer to me directly, so if that individuals happens to be reading this topic please pass along this message.

Haven't I said I'm merely expressing my opinion on this subject? Isn't that what a forum is for?

I can't see exactly why you take offense at this, but it is a tad hypocritical. Oh, and what did I do to deserve the silent treatment?

All opinions are relevent, and if someone's opinion does not agree with yours, it does not mean they are wrong, but it does create another set of reasons for other people to express theirs. I believe we have digressed from the topic into a battle of differentiated opinions. We should maybe turn back to the differences between hacking and cracking.

But that's just my opinion ;)

Adriac, I am sorry if you take offense by a non-direct comment. I have taken your opinion, and while I may disagree with it, that is fine. I am not taking offense; I would merely like to know why you are voiceing an opinion about something, while you have not read what has been written. And I do find it a bit annoying when you wander into a thread that you have not taken the time to read, and tell us all that our conversation, which I was rather enjoying, bothers you.
And Agent Rebellion, you are absolutely right; however, I think we have exauhsted the possiblities on the topic for now; start it up again in a month or so.
