obviously you are a "childs". The word is "children" and no they're not - I certainly wouldn't let most kids play resident evil <well - not unless they were as desensitised as myself at least> or some of the more "scary" games on GC, Xbox and other consoles.
PS2 and PS are for the "casual gamer" - shudder...

That's a good way of putting it - Nintendo make "child friendly" consoles - they have lots of great games suitable for most - that regardless of whether they are seen as "children's games" - they aren't - they are awesome usually. But they also have adults games. Sony consoles still suck almightily - and regardless I'm never going to confirm they are any good. As IMAO - they aren't.
This isn't true, good graphics can help suck you into a game, they (with the sound) can help build tension, and are a fundamental part of the gaming experiance. The huge majority of information comes via graphics.Quote: from Jackmn on 7:49 pm on July 17, 2003[br]Graphics mean absolutely nothing as far as gaming is concerned.
Would have comand & conquor been as good if it didn't use raster graphics and just used ASCII information?

Graphics are also a factor when comparing hardware. Which is what we are doing.

There have been a great many good ascii based war games. But that wasn't my point, I merely meant that less graphic intesive games, such as subspace, are much better in quality than most modern games, like halo or ut2003.Quote: from Phydaux on 2:29 am on July 18, 2003[br]This isn't true, good graphics can help suck you into a game, they (with the sound) can help build tension, and are a fundamental part of the gaming experiance. Big graphic-heavy games will never compare to the little classics, like liero and escape velocity.
Finally, the ability of the machine means nothing, only the quality of the games. And all recent consoles have been pretty miserable as far as game quality goes.

People said the same thing about EV and the like. Gameplay is the key, graphics are part of that (EV has descent graphics). There is also sound, music, UI, level design, animation, plot, dialog, etc. If you can put together all these into a great game it is wonderful. Alot of people do focus on graphics and neglect game design, and that is no good. But just because a game has great graphics does not mean it is not a good game. Many of the new RPGs have great graphics (it is really cool when a sunset makes you stop whatever you are doing and just appreciate the graphics), yet they also have much better game play than their predecessors. My major problem with consoles is the lack to the two great gaming input devices, the mouse and the keyboard. The third consoles had, but gave up on, the gun (like NES had). The controlers are ok, and for some games, especially sports games, are superior to the mouse and keyboard, but for most things the mouse and keyboard are the way to go and the lack of them on consoles (you can get them, but most games aren't setup for them. I have a mouse for SNES) makes them a much less desirable platform for high quality gameplay. :)
Graphics can be a gameplay element.
I LOVE to be immersed into a game, like in Halo.
Seeing those wide environments and just going, "Woah"
Immersion is a big factor in these newer games.
