Uplink does not teach you how to hack for real. It's just a game with madeup hacking tools, crackers, decyphers etc.
And by playing Uplink I can tell you that you won't learn how to hack, but maybe you'll learn something about how it basicly works.
And btw, does driving games teach you how to drive a car for real? - I don't think so...

Anyway, I really recommend you to purchase Uplink. It's a great game and you'll have a great time playing it. But don't expect to learn how to hack into microsoft or something... :)

There is very little in common between real hacking and uplink except for the terminology and the fact it uses computers (and possibly a modem/internet connection of some kind :)). The methodology is very, very different, and very, very much prettier in Uplink.

By the way EmDay, why is hacking so much more fun in real. Where's the motivation, don't you find it gets a little bit tedious unless you have an actual goal/target?
Computers will eventually rule the world.
But who will rule the computers?

it sounds like the concepts are there, but you won't walk away with anything that would allow you to hack. play the game and not get arrested for real. support this company and a good game. also show the world and major corporations that a small self started comapny can make a great game, not just  large corp like EA or ubisoft.

The "great graphics" part is disturbing me....

real hacking usually contains very few graphical intendations :)

Noone has made a "learn how to hack" game yet....

and Uplink isn't about 'hacking' (skillful use of computers), but rather about 'cracking' (maliciously breaking through security and bypassing it, but NOT necessarily causing damage).

And 'script kiddie'ing (downloading programs that do all the cracking work for you, then sitting there and thinking you're k3wl and th3 3l337. In Uplink that is justified, though!) :D

Hope that helps!

Hacker : Computer pirate that logs onto servers in an illegal way ( Bad hacker) or to find information on criminals (good hacker)
Cracker : Computer pirate that uses programs Such as C++ and other shit like that to modify files in favor of himself and other ppl.

Wow. . . Both wrong.  Heh.

This has been done to death but here is an overview:

Hacker-a person highly interested in the workings of a system (generally a computer).

Cracker-a person who breaks into a system (almost always computer related) with malicious intent.  A hacker may be a cracker but a cracker is in many cases not a hacker (ie script kiddies are crackers not hackers).

You dumb ass bitch, hacking in real life requires skill, an finesse, Uplink is a GAME a very good one, but if you want to be a real 3l!t3 hacker you have to RTFM, work with Python and C, and learn to program, then we can talk about "hacking", but infact it sounds like you want to be a cracker instead, numbnut.
