I just installed uplink on my PC (only £15 from HMV!) and my Symantec Internet Security program informed me that uplink.exe was trying to connect to a port on my machine that a trojan normally runs on?!?

Anyone know why uplink looks for this?

Uplink does use the Samba ports, but it is not a Trojan (or is it?).  I think this has to do with the multimonitor option, but it could be for some more sinester purpose.  :)

Yup, the "probe" is done when I select the multi-monitor option.... I guess its "normal"!  hehe (or is it?!)

Multimonitor. The 'network' option is to hook up multiple machines into a multi-monitor display, giving a readout of all your character's vital data, as well as a nice BIG version of the global map. And it uses port 31337, a joke on the part of the Introversion guys.. SAMBA/NetBIOS/SMB runs on port 139. Unfortunately, that same port *is* used by a number of trojans. However, you can simply telnet in and read the stream, if your other machine is balky to put up the Uplink dumb terminal screens.
