Hi all.

First of all, i like Uplink, i played Uplink, and now i started coding a hacking simulator, called Blue Sky.

I didn't wanted an Uplink clone ... but something new.

So far, i got 3 types of feedback :
1. Dude, ur game rocks! - useless
2. Dude, ur game sucks! - more useless

3.  Suggestions, improvements and bugreports. This is what a developer need to create a game that people love to play.
I am not a mindreader ... i don't know what you people like or dislike.

Making a hacking simulator is a hard job ... why? because there aren't many out there to use as starting points .... making a 3D shooter is easy .. why? there are hundreds of them to look at, and take the best out of all.

By reading this post you can do 3 things :
1. Ignore it
2. Post something like : i like/i hate it
3. Tell me what you want in a hacking simulator .. and almost for sure, you will get a nice game to play and enjoy.

By choosing 1 and 2, it will make no difference, neither to your, or to me.
By chossing number 3 ... you can get a nice game.

I wanted to search a place where i could get feedback for a hacking simulator ... and so far this is the best place.

So, if you have some ideea, why not share them, and make something out of it?
How many game developers will ask you : Dude, tell me what you like ... and we will do that?

I am not here to compete Uplink/Introversion ...I look at their work from a developers point of view, and notice they have put a lot of hard work into their game.

Blue Sky is intended to be completely mod-enabled.
People who had the curiosity to download the demo, and look at the game files might have noticed : everything is plain text, and the images are simple .tga files, so one with enough imagination, can create a nice level, some nice graphics, and share it with you.

I am trying to build a platfrom , one on wich you will be able to let you imagination run free and create what you like.

So, why not do something that you will have fun playing? ... i don't think is much fun to tell me that my game sucks/rocks ...

Thank you for your response, Jordan!

Everything will be completely mod-able, so yes ... custom missions can already be created (even in the demo .. if you are smart enough :) )

We are now considering the ideea to even have a SDk for those of you who want to code on the Blue Sky Engine.

Complet MOD tools along with documentation will be released to registered users of the game.

I don't know exactly what the full version is like but from what I've played in the demo you need a lot more commands (especially because it's command based). I do like how it's not a big GUI though. I like the console/command idea.

ok fair enough.
first of all i played it on winme. there seems to be a problem with the display in that  the buttons look like a 24bit bitmap changed into a 256 bitmap (ie spots of incorrect colour etc. it seems to run very slow (even the mouse lags) then very fast. if you could do some kind of mission where you have to anilise or doctor a picture that would be cool. for example:

person was standing in street leaning against street light, hack council database and get cctv file extract an image for the time you know he was there.  hack police database and use photo-id kit thing (you know choose a hairstyle,eyes, etc) to find out his identity, hack social security database to find his address. send this information to employer and read in news about goons beating the shit out of said person.  get the id wrong 3 times and new mission is posted to mission board looking for your info. someone else accepts and game ends with your door being kicked in.
also be able to hack irs to give someone an audit :)

I like double ee's idea about finding out about the person irs etc etc etc...
However one thing that would be nice would be the ability to access satelites etc...maybe the FBI, NSA, CIa, NASA, even nuclear defence etc.

also how about a different way of looking at traces:
you hack a server then place a program in it. when the trace reaches that server it sends out a signal(looks like radar/pebble dropped in water expanding out from point.  not a great deal of functionality but it would look cool (it does in my head)

That's the spirit !!!
That is what i wanted from you guys. I am keeping all your ideeas under consideration.

The next 2 levels in BS will involve :

1. Finding one's identity
2. Satellite things :)))

We also started adding a GUI for those who don't want to type much, and just like to click more :)))

I will look into the performance issue ... the current version runs ok here.

I had an issue with DirectShow playback, when i enabled a track to loop ... framerate started to drop dramaticly .. this is why i disabled track looping in the demo.

As far as I can tell, i switched back to DirectSound8 and solved this issue.

On any decent computer, the framerate should be equal with your display'r refresh rate.

iv got a cople of other suggestions in other posts in the forums. do a search "hack the irs" tread. as i recall that was pretty good for ideas

also could you make the links a bit more transparent. i couldent find where to go after the gateway. i know about the satlink but there is no wway i have time to crack it.
could you fix the problems with the keys(shift etc) and also a built in mp3 player would be cool(or even just allowing you to run winamp without leaving the game)

Press F3 ... get a faster cracker/decrypter ....
After you have money .. you MUST upgrade your tools in order to pass on new levels :)

are the commands modable?

cuz the thing that ruined the game the most where the commands...

its kinda dumb to 'crack' a server... or 'decrypt' a server...

first of all, the game is too rigid. you have to make it more interesting than straight hacking. There should be more features in the demo, and have say a time limit instead. Advertise in places other than a forum for Uplink and, make it eaiser to customise. (Add more places to hack as well)
Two places to advertise are ClickThru and Trafficswarm
