I ain't a newbie, but your numbers clearly illustrated a pattern where the "44 and 43" numbers are descending... =)

But alas, I'm wrong... oh well, keep guessing  :P

Thats easy. You can't dig half a hole. As soon as the earth is removed even a little, you have a hole so you can't have half of one.

Of course you can have half a hole.
When you dig a hole you have 1, if you give someone half of it you only have half of a hole because that other dude has the other half.
