Hey, don't knock the Matrix. It had special effects that held my attention almost as long as those in Tron.

I'll say it again, The Matrix sucked, and I've seen better special effects at atomfilms.com

Takedown is by far the best hacking movie in the world... It doesn't have a bunch of fucked up kids running around, dancing in circles and singing "hack the gibson"... Wargames is better, although I still doubt that a server from protovision, joshua, could really launch nuclear warfare... however it does have war dialing, which is sweet... Takedown still takes the cake, because it was based on a real hacker, and you can see win 3.11 and the WS-Ftp client, is more close to home then dade murphy's "256 colors display!"

It has been stated before in this thread: The Matrix is not a hacker movie... It is an action movie to my opinion, so let's just leave it out of this thread, no? :)

I think Wargames has to be one of the best, I have to see it once again...

At the moment I'll have to say Takedown, but I haven't seen Sneakers yet so maybe the tune will change.

Hmm. Generally, I liked Wargames, Sneakers, and Tron, though other movies have some redeeming value.

Wargames has an interesting screwup -- you cannot 'wardial' with an acoustic coupler. I didn't know that either till it was pointed out to me ;)

Sneakers is an excellent example of 'tiger team' security tests -- hiring folks to stress-test your ability to withstand intrusion.

Tron is a classic, though some of the SFX do make me wince. In fairness, though, it's 20 years old and I've been watching CGI stuff so long I'm spoiled.

Hm. The others...

Hackers: Unless you like Angelica Jolie, or you want to see how much weight Fisher Stevens put on for that role, don't bother. Not particularly impressive.

The Matrix: COME ON, FOLKS. It's not a hacker movie. Cyberpunk, maybe, I could buy that. But the only people who should be calling it a hacker movie are the ones who think they're 'l33t' by invoking god mode in an FPS. Since that's what Neo did near the end. *PFFT*

Swordfish: Never saw it. No real intention to, as my opinion of John Travolta fell through the floor after seeing 'Battlefield Earth'. Ugh. UGH.

And if we're going to get into movies which just feature scenes where computers get hacked, might as well add 'Star Wars' when R2D2 hacks the Death Star computer.  :)
