[Suggestion] prison commissary
A prison commissary would serve a store within the prison. the prisoners would be able to buy certain luxury items, snacks and hygiene products. the prisoners would also be able to work in it serving other prisoners.

I've been having the same thoughts. In real prisons, commissaries provide the prisoners with a way to purchase luxuries, better/extra food, some are even selling tablet computers now. On the evil side, you can also charge a fee for families making deposits, and make a hefty profit on the items sold as well. Ain't the prison industrial complex great?

Great idea. Such stores could even work as a prize for well-behavored interns. If you cause no problem and are not caught with contraband, you can shop there. Step out of the line, and the store is closed for you for some time.

I support this.

I support this, also.
Texas already does this. Has for a long time.

It would be even cooler if you could pick which luxury items you want sold in the commissary.
Allowing these items would have varying impacts on your punishment grading. Each item could be traded for something more nefarious (weapons, drugs or tools) and would each come with certain advantages and disadvantages.
Examples involving current luxury items:
- Cigs and lighters: fire risk, bad for prisoners' health grading, but gives inmates a sense of freedom.
- Mobile phones: helps a prisoner keep in touch with his family, but facilitates escapes and increases the amount of attempts made to smuggle contraband into the prison.
- Porn mags: Prison cells give a small sense of freedom, but increases prisoners' need for fresh clothing. Also increases privacy needs in holding cells, and several porn mags can be turned into a weapon.
Other possibilities:
- Newspapers/magazines: Helps satisfy prisoners' litteracy needs, but your prison gets dirtier quicker. Placing bins helps offset this. Not as efficient as books. Like porn mags, several of these can be turned into a weapon.
- Snack food: Helps prisoners satisfy their hunger, but the prison - particularly cells - gets dirtier quicker. Placing bins helps offset this.
- Civilian clothing: radically increases your prisoners' sense of freedom and greatly reduces their clothing needs. Gives a buff similar to being well fed. You no longer need to buy prison uniforms. Prisoners become harder to distinguish from visitors. You need to mouseover to see a prisoner's security level. Your punishment grading suffers greatly. Laundry distribution is significantly slower. Guards have a slightly decreased chance of finding contraband when searching prisoners.
You get the idea.
