Cooks won't cook. I've tried everything.

Postby Daedelous » Tue Dec 23, 2014 3:17 am

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not...so I'm posting it here before I push it to Mantis, in case someone is able to tell me I'm stupid.

My cooks have stopped cooking. They just wander around the kitchen and my prisoners are starving to death. The cooks never leave except to go pickup ingredients...which then just sit in the kitchen doing nothing. I know this is a common problem with some fixes working for others, but I've been unable to find a solution that works for me. I've done my best to solve this on my own, but I can't. I must be missing something stupid. What I've tried so far:

- dismantled and recreated my entire kitchen and canteen (four times)
- fired and rehired all my cooks (twice)
- changed the number of cooks (anywhere from 1 to 8)
- unzoned, and rezoned, both the kitchen and the canteen (three times)
- remade the kitchen into its own fully walled/doored room
- unzoned my entire prison, unpaused it for a few seconds, then rezoned it
- changed the quality/variance of the food (from best to worst to in-between)
- checked my save file to make sure "FOOD" is set to "true"
- checked to make sure my deliveries aren't backed up

I'm not sure where to upload my save game so people can look at it. if someone can give me a site, I'll upload to there.

Thanks!

Is there something on top of the freezer?

I would go back to a fully walled kitchen with door, freshly zoned as kitchen. That's the setup which should work.

You only have one canteen? Either way check logistics just to see if this kitchen knows what to cook for (if linked to a 0 demand canteen... no cooking gets done I think)

As was said, we need to see what your logistics screen looks like.

Wall it off, rezone it, and put doors there (staff doors).. I've noticed you don't use them anywhere. And put a large prison door on your canteen and set it to locked open (so the room becomes a separate sector from the rest of your prison.. which is why I think you might be encountering this problem). Check your logistics screen after you've done this to be sure everything is linked up properly.

Lines for walls, squares for doors:

Might also try de-zoning the canteen portion, then rezoning with a one square gap between it and the kitchen completely along where they meet now (or just de-zone the one square gap on the canteen side).

Or go back to the wall separated version, making sure to de-zone the area where the wall is going to go in first.

Here's the save file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_pUyCqk4Q-EUkRPQ1ZMR0lYQzQ/view?usp=sharing

I've tried this.

Just food. They always put it there.

Yes, it's a pretty small prison. And I don't have micromanagement researched yet, so I did so, and here are the results. It looks like I have two canteens, somehow, instead of one? This may be the problem(?). I'm not sure what's going on. (The demand and supply on both reads 0, but I'm not sure why)

Done. They still just walk around the kitchen. See screenshot below.

I fixed it. I researched micromanagement and apparently none of my cell blocks were assigned to a canteen, so demand was zero. I just couldn't see it without micromanagement.

Thanks for the help, all!

that should not happen. Were the canteens zoned as canteen (missed that once myself ;-)) and reachable by target prisoner group?

IV's intention was for the automated algorithm to handle most situations. I can't downloaded your file at the moment, but it would seem that this is an example where the automated system fails. Does everything work correctly if you place a north to south facing double jail door between the cell block and the rest of the prison? The issue may be that your cells are not separated (zone-wise) from the remainder of the prison, and it's showing as one large zone block. In this case, it would seem that the tally of prisoners is incorrect or not being assigned correctly.

If this is the case, it should be reported. Or the requirements need to be clear that cell blocks need to have their own zone with the new food system.

_alphaBeta_, I opened up his save, and placing the jail door you suggested fixed the problem. I also could not seem to manually appoint a cell block either.

So, Daedelous, to fix this, I would suggest placing this door AND adjusting your regime so that your prisoners will soon get a chance to eat. Otherwise, they will start rioting/destroying things and just not be nice.

Also, if you want prisoners to be able to work in the workshop/laundry/cleaning, you need to place a door (all types of doors will work) in the entrances to these rooms and assign how many prisoners may work there through logistics.

Lastly, I noticed that I can assign guards to rooms without you having deployment researched, but this might be another bug entirely.
