[Suggestion] Room Upgrades

Postby calv12345 » Sat May 31, 2014 9:29 pm

Had a few searches on the forum but couldn't find anything like this (although if there is I apologise)

I would like to say this came to me in a dream but it didn't, it came to me while playing Prison Architect (Which I guess is better)

I thought of an idea that it should be possible to 'upgrade' your rooms as sorts. It could include upgrades for many of the rooms that have positives (with drawbacks in some cases) with a cost. For example the kitchen could have upgrades like; Locked Knife Cabinet - reduces likelihood prisoners steal knives by X%, High power stove - Speeds up cooking time by X%.

If you wanted a different system you could have antagonistic upgrades with opposite benefits and consequences. Locked knife cabinet - X% lower knife steal rate, X% slower cooking time (chefs and prisoners would have to have the cabinet unlocked thus taking time) VS Unlocked knife cabinet X% higher knife steal rate, X% faster cooking time. This allows you to choose a style, safety VS efficiency.

Other rooms- Here are ideas I had for possible upgrades.

Security; Donut subscription - Guards stationed in this room need to visit the staff room less often
HD monitor screens - Each CCTV monitor can accommodate one more camera

Workshop; Locked tool cabinet (Same principle as kitchen)
Informative energy saving posters - Reduces power consumption of each saw/press
Sawdust extraction - Reduce time taken to saw
Safety signs - Increase pass rate of workshop safety course (Also could be used for kitchen)

Cells; Comfy mattress - Prisoners require less sleep but lockdown in cell has less effect VS Straw mattress lockdown in cell has more effect but prisoners require more sleep.

Infirmary; Drugs sign out sheet - Reduces steal rate of drugs from infirmary
All patients get IV's - Anyone in a medical bed gets slowly healed without need for a doctor
First aid kits - Anyone healed outside the infirmary by a doctor is healed faster

Classroom; Modern textbooks- Increase prisoner knowledge
Motivational posters- Increase prisoner attention

Let me know what you think and suggest some more upgrades :)

I like this idea. Assuming the prices, advantages and disadvantages are well balanced, I think it makes for a great way to juggle your cashflow and your prisoner needs.

This is a really good idea, that would also work very well with some research options.

+1

I think it'd add a new layer when it comes to behaving/misbehaving prisoners as they fight over the 'good room'.
Well, in my head at least. One can only wish game code was this complex.

i like these ideas

BUT

i would like to see Gangs, deeper prisoner relations (ie. best friends/grudges), black market etc etc implemented before this

Prisoners need to be a bit more complex not just for difficulty and a sense of each prisoner is an individual. then that also adds more significance to these kind of room upgrades

So we have to suggest ideas in the order they are to be implemented?

But yeah I like this idea. Currently the way it works is once you build a room you never have to interact with it again unless you are redesigning the prison. It would be nice if I could improve the effecency of a room by purchasing new bits and pieces after I have built them once i have the $/have researched the item.

I like it! But as said before, inmate AI needs work to make this really count. But good idea.

I love the idea of upgrades, especially those made by the prisoners (which imo should lean more towards straight up benefits because of the work taken to get them). For example the prisoners being able to make their own beds - although these can only be sold currently I'm hoping they implement a way of rolling out these new beds that will help your prisoners sleep better, plus other crafted objects to add interest to a cell or common room, such as a more comfortable hand made wooden bench, chess sets, better book shelves (could even increase chance of a prisoner who reads from one to pass various courses) etc.

I like your ideas on different options for bought equipment with tradeoffs.

I do like this idea well thought out and a good aspect of negative to positive side effects could really make designing your prisons a whole new experience especially if you are able to reward good behavior. Of course prisoner AI needs to be improved but why knock a good suggestion just because of that.

This was mentioned in one of the update videos.

I would love to see upgrades, both ones that are prisoner made, and others that can be unlocked through the bureaucracy system. I was giving some thought to this while playing, and what each upgrade could do. To be honest, I really would like to have a power facility I could upgrade far better than those little additive battery things. To be honest, they really only help so much, and, my prisons run anywhere from 4 to 7 power stations at any one time after they expand. Mind you, I build monster prisons, but, it would be nice to decide that I want to make an existing power station stronger, rather than simply building a new one, and risking getting my two stations tangled in later planning.

The offset to this could be, that if you want a larger station, inmates have to work there to help generate the power. This would be another use for forestry...additionally, the need for environment and for hygiene could rapidly decrease for inmates putting in the wood for the fuel.

I like the idea for upgrades, because it also brings into question how to facilitate the need decay of inmates, and adds a complex level of game-play.

As many said above, AI would need to be improved, but I would love to see something like this implemented in alpha 23 or 24...

I like these suggestions a lot. The way I see it, there are two ways to do this. You could either have it as part of bureaucracy, or as specific items. I would like to see it as part of bureaucracy. The thing about specific items is that it would become less useful the larger your prison got. Plus it would add to the already giant list of items the game has. It might not be too big a deal at the start, but if you make a huge prison, the cost gets more and more. You could also have it as a mix of both. Somewhere in the research tree would be something like "advanced items" and that would give you the ability to buy things like this.

The book upgrades could probably be unlocked once the upcoming Library room is implemented.
