I would like to say this came to me in a dream but it didn't, it came to me while playing Prison Architect (Which I guess is better)
I thought of an idea that it should be possible to 'upgrade' your rooms as sorts. It could include upgrades for many of the rooms that have positives (with drawbacks in some cases) with a cost. For example the kitchen could have upgrades like; Locked Knife Cabinet - reduces likelihood prisoners steal knives by X%, High power stove - Speeds up cooking time by X%.
If you wanted a different system you could have antagonistic upgrades with opposite benefits and consequences. Locked knife cabinet - X% lower knife steal rate, X% slower cooking time (chefs and prisoners would have to have the cabinet unlocked thus taking time) VS Unlocked knife cabinet X% higher knife steal rate, X% faster cooking time. This allows you to choose a style, safety VS efficiency.
Other rooms- Here are ideas I had for possible upgrades.
Security; Donut subscription - Guards stationed in this room need to visit the staff room less often
HD monitor screens - Each CCTV monitor can accommodate one more camera
Workshop; Locked tool cabinet (Same principle as kitchen)
Informative energy saving posters - Reduces power consumption of each saw/press
Sawdust extraction - Reduce time taken to saw
Safety signs - Increase pass rate of workshop safety course (Also could be used for kitchen)
Cells; Comfy mattress - Prisoners require less sleep but lockdown in cell has less effect VS Straw mattress lockdown in cell has more effect but prisoners require more sleep.
Infirmary; Drugs sign out sheet - Reduces steal rate of drugs from infirmary
All patients get IV's - Anyone in a medical bed gets slowly healed without need for a doctor
First aid kits - Anyone healed outside the infirmary by a doctor is healed faster
Classroom; Modern textbooks- Increase prisoner knowledge
Motivational posters- Increase prisoner attention
Let me know what you think and suggest some more upgrades
