About drains

Postby McEdy » Sun Sep 15, 2013 7:41 pm

That's the question: do drains work properly ingame at the moment? Because I have the feeling that they're a little bit underpowered at the moment...
I placed around 12 drains in my shower and the water flowed out of the shower altrough :x
Another question: Do I have to place pipes underneath my drains? Because I do so anytime, dunno if that's necessary...
Would make sense, that's my opinion

Did you place the drains at all of your doors? As far as I can tell the only way to prevent flooding is to completely block off all doors with drains.

Ya the best way to stop the water is use them to block the doors. You can't put them just directly under the shower it won't work. Also you dont need to install pipes under the drains your just waisting money. They will just work where ever you place them.

So I have to place the drains right underneath my doors? If yes then there is a need for a change I think

EDIT:

Thx 762SkS for your answer :) I think they should change this so that you'd have to install pipes. And an idea with water consumption like with electricity just came to me aswell

be careful placing drains and doors together as i just had this issue. just place the drains in your openings to your shower rooms. if you place a drain or two in a door way then place a door over the drains it can cause issues.

So first I place the door and then the drain underneath it and not the other way round, right?

People haven't been so clear.

You don't need to put drains under your doors. Water can go around a drain but not past it, so you need a line of them where you want the water to stop. Hang on I got a picture round here somewhere..

Like that. (ignore the yellow line, that's my doing).

Your right and wrong.

Drains need to be between two walls and if that wall just happens to be a door way then that is the best place for the drain unless you add additional drains either side of the door.

For example lets pretend there is a shower in your cells how can we do it?

Way 1:
2 drains in the cell before the door 10 cells -= 20 drains

Way 2:
2/3 drains on the outside of the cell depending on cell location 10 cells = 28 drains

Way 3:
The door way. 10 cells = 10 drains

all depends how much you want to spend.

A layout I am particularly fond of is a 3x5 block. It integrates perfectly in a cellblock (it takes up exactly two 3x2 cell spaces). It has a prisoner capacity of about 50 each - when the regime is set to free time and prisoners take a shower whenever they need one, it would be significantly less if you had dedicated shower times. It is small enough to not need a dedicated guard, or a door, so the single entry space can be a drain, which keeps all the water within the shower.

Cheap, efficient, effective.

I don't think that anyone has quite explained this correctly yet, so let me give it a go: drains essentially act like walls that stop the flow of water (and nothing else). It is not that they are underpowered---you just aren't using them correctly (or don't properly understand what it is that they do). You could create a wall-less shower surrounded by drains, and that would prevent flooding, like so:

Code: Select all

#####
#   #
#   #
#####

you can put drains under your doors, like this:

Code: Select all

--#--

-----

or you could put three drains in front of the door, like so:

Code: Select all

-- --
###

-----

Any of these (and more) will prevent flooding.
