I always make sure each block is not too big and they all have separate showers as if you have a massive prison with 1 shower block you are asking for a fight/riot. I pack my Min Sec in as tight as possible where as I will spread the Max and Norm out a bit more, the Max sec will have cells around the outside of a block then showers in the middle, whereas min get as many as possible and shower block is at the end. The more open plan Max means it's easy for guards to get to cells quickly and they can easily see whats going on.

What I like to do is build 32 prisoner blocks, 16 cells per side, and pack those blocks as close together as possible. I actually prefer using a single shower, canteen, etc. especially with the new punishment system because I have my prisoners locked up for days if they try to pull fights so it keeps the population under my control quite well.
Yes, that is a penguin with rabies. Deal with it.

Having many small cell blocks packed together is better than one big one. If you have a big one, at least separate it with doors. This makes handling riots much easier as your riot guards only need to fight groups of about a dozen prisoners instead of 200 at a time, which means they get more chances to get healed and each guard can't be swarmed by 50 prisoners an instakilled.

Personally my design for cell blocks is under revision, as the Alpha 13 requirements for cells means you can't add a 1x1 Shower to a Cell without it becoming invalid (the Cell no longer counts as being enclosed); however, my most recent version was arranged into a 65x21 building, separated into four wings, each wing holding 20 cells, and then further broken down into 10-cell blocks.

The bottlenecks were there mostly for metal detectors, although I considered adding more locked-open jail doors to subdivide riots into more manageable portions- I decided against it as I kept my prisoners' needs low, and the limits on patrols in Alpha 12 would've required me to double the number of guards dedicated to the area.

At this point I'm considering adding four small showers to the ends of the building, possibly along with a set of small laundry rooms (though a single, larger separate laundry seems to be working just fine at the moment).

It's probably also worth noting that I tend to favor small prisons, so this may not be as viable with a larger setup. Depending on the layout you use for your utilities, you may also run into issues with water pressure at the extreme corners of the building.

I just go for an organic feel- I don't like the "endless column of cells" approach to my cell blocks. For you laymen, that means I put them in a predisposed jumbled heap.
When in doubt, you are probably right. The only right person. In fact, you are probably right as of right now!

If you're on Steam, go to the Workshop and search for my prison "Perfect Prison IMO" to get an example of how I design my prisons. The one that's currently posted was my first version of this style of prison. I've greatly improved on the design since, but the cell blocks are still generally the same. I'll be posting a V2 soon.

Thanks, I will try.

I like doing mine like this, in this block you have 101 cells split into 2 different cell blocks, i am trying to get a prison made of 4 of theses but its difficult with the kitchen/canteen, could do with assigning cooks to a kichen and a canteen instead of trecking all over the place to put food on a serving table. My current prission is just about to have the 2nd block opened mirrored this one
