This is a cultural/religious issue. Americans in particular are very prudent when it comes to swearing and nudity (surprised me no-one mentioned the semi-nude polaroids in the tutorial), much less so when it comes to violence and murder. For Brits swearing is mostly a non-issue in friendly informal banter.

There's nothing wrong with swearing in itself. It's just a matter of context whether or not swearing is appropriate. It's also a matter of *how* swearwords are used. There's a difference between cursing when you stub your toe and calling people names or using slurs. Exposing kids to swearwords is clearly not harming them, they just need to learn why it's often inappropriate and not socially acceptable. It's *why* people swear that we don't want to expose children to it: violence, aggression, suffering, and so on.

Of course some people find even the most light-hearted use of swearwords offensive. Some claim religious reasons (or "morals", which boils down to the same if you dig deeper). Guess what, I find religion offensive. But there's no "right not to be offended" and we should err on the side of freedom of expression when there's no evidence for actual harm.

Seriously, talk your kids and teach them what language you think is (not) appropriate and why.
Requesting that other people filter, or even add insanely silly bleeps, is hilarious to me in this context.

Having to execute someone in the tutorial is to me much, much worse and a truly disturbing political statement, capital punishment isn't close to the norm where I live, and is frowned upon by international human rights organisations. (Also armed guards with a right to kill which is suggested on the forum is a strange concept to me.) Having a young(-ish) kid exposed to that could well be reasons for a serious discussion afterwards. However, I don't consider my world view a reason to censor anything. I just won't construct a death row when it comes, and if I reinstall the game I'll skip the tutorial since it adds nothing to the game and annoys me.

I much rather have the devs speak informally (with or without swearing) than read from a script carefully edited to try to not offend anyone. (Someone will always be offended anyway.)

I'm not under 18 by a long shot and have partial responsibility for upbringing of kids, however I'm also not american, maybe it's a cultural difference...

honestly, i'd say expecting a child to be mature enough to even know what a prison is or is for is quite a lot more than you should realistically expect.
sure they understand that some things are wrong and you shouldn't do them, but i don't think children understand such severe forms of punishment as incarceration.

Sad thing is, the guy that posted the comment seems to be of the view that having extreme violence(even if it is cartoonish) is ok for kids but a couple of swear words aren't.

What an odd world we live in. I think he's probably just a bad parent.

Then again, I'm Scottish & swearing is pretty much the daily norm for us here. Personal views ftw!

I think that you all need to separate the complaint that there is profanity in a PR video from the addendum that profanity might be offensive to parents. That is one of many reasons why profanity may or may not be appropriate. These videos are supposed to present IV and Prison Architect to a set of potential customers. They inform those people about the game and about who IV are. Certain potential customers might be offended by the profanity and dismiss IV as unprofessional, while others might heartily approve and commit to shelling out for the game on that basis alone. Most probably won't care. The question for IV is not "Are we offending anyone?" but rather "Are we offending people that we don't want to offend?" That is, what kind of customer are they trying to attract, or do they even care.

I defenetly knew what a prison was by the time I was 10. I also knew how to download games for free. And was quite fond of WWII games, where A LOT of people die.

"The guy" who posted this, pointed out the violance in this game is NOT extreme actually.... and I work with plenty of scottish people who don't swear. Admitadly none of them come from Glasgow.

I too was struck by the swearing in the video for PA 11.

Did manage to jump over it though.

Would have been nice to be warned as those who wish not to use such language and would prefer not to have to hear it, could have muted the intro.

This is not a game for kids. Have you read the biographies of the convicts? Have you seen what goes on in the game? Police brutality, violence, murders.
And you are whining about someone cursing on a youtube video...
Not only that, I see people personally attacking others that disagree with them.
I have been accused of being unfit to parent my two children, by a user I have never even had a discourse with, just because I think it is socially acceptable to curse in a PR video for a game for large kids or adults.
