Add the linking mechanics from gunpoint

Postby madplayshd » Sun Jun 23, 2013 3:28 pm

For those of you who havent played gunpoint: basically you can go into 'overwrite mode' and wire all kinds of things together by simply dragging a line. For example a switch linked to a door make the switch toggle the door. A switch linked to a camera makes the switch toggle the camera. A camera linked to a door makes the camera toogle the door, etc.

This would be better than just adding motion sensors etc. with predefined behavior, because if you let players define the behavior themself, they can do whatever they want with it. Also, should allow electronics to be linked to controls like lockdown.

A couple examples:

Two doors linked together: the doors toggle each other, so that if one door opens, the other one closes, so its like an airlock.

Metal detector linked to door: whenever contraband is found, it closes the door.

Motion sensor in perimeter linked to claxon and lockdown: force lockdown and toggle alarm when prisoner triggers motion sensor

Motion sensor linked to door linked to other door: motion toggled airlock.

.. etc, the possibilities are pretty much endless if you just give players basic building blocks to play around with. A bit like all the redstone stuff from minecraft, but less frustrating to make.

It would be pretty easy to implement but would allow for a great many different possibilities. Basically every building block gets the two states 1 and 0. Also every part can either be sender (switch), receiver (claxon), or both (door, camera). Signal lines are directional so it can be either A->B, A<-B or A<->B but there isnt a limit for the number of signal lines. If a part is connected to a different part, it sends its state depending on the direction ot the signal line.

Just buy Gunpoint and leave PA out of it.

Check out Dwarf Fortress, it has pretty much these mechanics.

This isn't a case of trying to make the same game. PA and Gunpoint are nothing alike.

This is a case where one feature works well in many genres - hell, Starbound is using it too.

Pretty sure something like this is planned. After all, gun-point stole so much from Subversion. :P

But yeah, somewhere there's a sketch Chris did of door servos and stuff for the game.

Last year he spent the first 5 mins talking about door servos and mechanisms from Alcatraz (the real prison, not the weird Tycoon expansion) in his dev session, I think it's a safe bet that they'll be in it ;)

+1 for this

There's a ton of possibilities, not only to make the prison more secure, but to also make it more easier to be defended by the prisoners in case their riot and end up hacking control painels to gain access to doors, rooms, etc.

EDIT: Just to add up, this would allow a better management of lights too.

This game is all about planning & designing with a great level of detail (Pipes, Garbage Pick-up zones, the way meals are prepared…). This kind of wiriing would definitely add to the game.

As game breaking as I think it would be, I would like to be able to rig up machine guns to cameras to auto-mow-down any prisoner that takes a wrong turn in my prison. ;)
