Alpha 10 almost unplayable from lag

Postby LittleEricPKT » Sat Jun 01, 2013 4:55 am

This isn't really a "bug", more of an overall problem with the game I thought I could get solutions for from fellow gamers. I'm on a 2 year old 15" Macbook Pro. I can't play the game longer than 10-15 minutes before the game starts bogging down. I've seen things like starting new games and deleting the preferences.txt file can help this, any other suggestions? Maybe recommend the devs give us more graphical options. But to be honest it's hard to see why a 2D game like this is a resource hog when the same computer can handle a flight simulator...

I'm not really interested in debating whether lag is getting better or worse, no offense. I'm looking for solutions to help with lag.

No offense taken, I just don't know where to begin. Maybe post a pic of your prison?

Please see other threads about this. Likely a CPU bottleneck with rendering. Usually happens with high numbers of staff or over 100+ prisoners. I have a HUGE staff list like 200 staff and 212 prisoners and my game is LAGGY as hell.

To all of those out there that say their game isn't laggy, play on a medium or large map with 100-150+ prisoners and lots of staff. Likely you're playing on a small map with only a few prisoners and no staff.

This game appears to be using only two or three threads when running.

I find it better too. I have a mbp, and the longer term slow downs seems to have been cleared up. I haven't tried anyone else's maps for a comparison tho. I have about 230 goons

Also, as has been mentioned before, the game currently has a memory leak, so after you play for a while it will get significantly slower and slower, and the only way to fix it is to restart the game.

Don't forget we're in alpha here and the game is clearly very poorly optimized, so it's possible that that's the main problem. There's nothing to be done really until they fix that (which they will I'm sure, but it probably won't be until beta - right now they're just focusing on adding new content).

The game also gets unplayable when you try to build huge foundations.
You can just start a small map and build a 120x120x foundation and it drops less to 2fps

I play only on small maps and build as effizient i can.
Something is wrong with the bigger maps and a large one is no fun.

dont get to much staff i run a 200man prison with 40staff - no janitors or gardener
let the prisenor work for you saves cash and CPU. :P
You also can play in save mode helps me alot..

Game ran great for me before. I have a very high-end machine.

Now it runs awful. I think it may be the "large foundation" issue, because that's when I saw it happen. It wasn't an issue with a large population, this was on a brand new prison.

What the hell could you possibly need 200 staff for?

Confirm your map is laggy in my machine:
i7980x 6 core
12gb
Nvidia Titan

3 cores were part utilised, nothing obviously making it lag (no core at max). Suspect a bug of some sort.

We've been keeping an eye on this on the Steam forums.

Can you guys hitting lag check and see what your memory utilization looks like in game as you play? One player noticed that he/she started seeing lag after around 730Mb of memory (which is a lot of memory, really).

I suffer from the same problems. The game become unplayable after 30 minutes of gameplay on a rather medium sized prison. This is only since alpha 10 though.

I should probably post system specs:

i7-2600k (3.8ghz w/ TURBO)
16GB OS memory
Win 8 x64
Dual GTX480 SLI (8x/8x link) (Tried both Single frame rendering and Alternate-Frame-Rendering1/2 no difference. Video card sits at 8%.
Samsung 640 SSD 512GB

My memory usage goes way up to start with, I'll play for a bit and get some numbers for you guys in a few. Glad to know my map is broken and can be used as a reliable lag tester/stress prison.
